Job summary

The City of Burlington seeks a Community Support Liaison to coordinate social-work efforts addressing homelessness, substance-use disorders, and mental health within the Police Department. The role emphasizes trauma-centered, person-centered strategies and strong cross-agency collaboration.

The CSL will work with Police Officers as needed, maintain records, and participate in strategy meetings with a focus on reducing police response to non-criminal calls.

Qualifications

  • Master's Degree in Social Work or related field with two years of experience, or Bachelor's with three years of relevant experience.
  • Extra consideration for experience with youth mental health, houseless individuals, and co-occurring disorders.
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills are necessary.
  • Ability to work outside typical business hours and weekends.
  • Must successfully complete Police Department oral board interview and background investigation.

Responsibilities

  • Engage and help individuals with substance use disorder and connect them to treatment.
  • Respond to non-criminal intervention requests from police and city departments.
  • Collaborate with Burlington social-service providers for coordinated interventions.
  • Develop and maintain partnerships for a team-based problem-solving approach.
  • Prepare for and attend strategy and planning meetings with stakeholders.
  • Provide assessments and connect individuals to community resources.
  • Outreach to homeless encampments and community-related activities.
  • Maintain up-to-date electronic records for all interventions.
  • Act as liaison between the community and the Police Department.
  • Assist the public navigating police and wider criminal-justice services.
  • Participate in interagency teams to solve complex social issues.
