Job summary

Job description

Help vulnerable populations and the City of Burlington respond to the challenge of meeting growing social service needs in the community. Join the Howard Center Street Outreach Team and work collaboratively with the Burlington Police Department, the Burlington Fire Department, Howard Center’s Crisis Services and area service providers to respond to real-time calls for service to emergent situations. Response to these calls can may include deescalation, triage, immediate support, and coordination of other crisis services. In your “down time” you will be reaching out to individuals who frequent the downtown core to provide support and connect them to services, as appropriate. Some interim case management duties and follow up required, dependent on the context and situation. This job takes place in a variety of settings in the community: the streets, parks, the police department, UVMMC, private homes, etc.

Responsibilities:
  • Respond to calls for service at the request of local police departments dispatch or officer
  • Provide immediate triage and outreach intervention in the areas of mental health, substance abuse, and child, youth, and family services
  • Monitor and prevent escalation of symptoms of mental illness and substance abuse within the community
  • Provide interim case management services for individuals before linking them with appropriate community providers
Requirements:
  • Valid driver's license and use of a personal vehicle
  • Four years' combination of experience, skills and/or education
  • Evening and weekend availability
  • Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions
  • Favorable background checks through the Police Department
  • Working with diverse populations in an unsecured community setting.
  • Excellent communication, critical thinking, and deescalation skills.
  • Ability to multitask and think on your feet in a fast paced environment.
Structure:
  • Full-time (37.5 hours)
  • Non-exempt
  • Starting at $28.02 an hour
  • We offer a competitive salary commensurate to experience
