Description of Work

Work is related to the maintenance and construction of State-owned fixed and moveable bridges, culverts, and pipes within Division One and will be based in the Creswell Bridge Maintenance Unit located in Washington County, NC. This position is technical in nature and labor intensive. The employee will be required to work in diverse working environments in all types of weather conditions. The recommended applicant will work in and around heavy traffic, near heavy equipment, and with power tools.

The recommended applicant must be able to work in a close team environment or independently, as needed.

The recommended applicant must be able to carry and lift up to 100 pounds occasionally, 50 pounds frequently.

The recommended applicant could possibly be exposed to briars, poisonous plants, spiders, and snakes when working around and under bridges.

The selected candidate must be able to legally operate CDL required equipment/trucks with both manual and automatic transmissions at the time of hire or within 360 days of hire date.

Pre-employment drug testing is required for this position.

As a condition of employment, a release form (ALCDRG-01) and a background statement (ALCDRG-06) must be signed allowing the NCDOT to check with previous employers for the past three years about controlled substances and alcohol testing.

Steel toe safety shoes are needed.

The employee will be expected to work in emergency situations and inclement weather.

The position will require climbing, bending, and walking on uneven terrain.

May require work during non-traditional work hours, including nights, weekends and holidays, and times of emergency.

Offer of employment will be contingent upon successful completion of the NCDOT post offer employment evaluation.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities/Management Preferences

Salary Grade: NC05 Salary Range: $33,902 - $59,327

Management prefers applicants with the following:

  • Experience in pipe installation and installation of erosion control devices
  • Experience in the layout of traffic control in work zones
  • Working knowledge of standard bridge maintenance and construction procedures
  • Experience constructing formwork using skilled carpentry techniques
  • Experience drilling, cutting, and fitting structural steel to tight tolerances
Minimum Education and Experience

High School or General Educational Development diploma and three years of experience operating equipment directly related to the field of specialization; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Necessary Special Requirements

Either possession of a current Commercial Driver’s License on the date of hire, OR the North Carolina Commercial Driver’s License must be obtained through completion of on-the-job training and all requirements mandated by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (Federal Registry 49 CFR 383) within 360 days of the date of hire.
