Job description

We are in search of an Assist Transportation Manager in supervising, directing, and coordinating activities of transportation department to include Drivers (CDL and non CDL). Dispatching personnel, and third-party driver service providers. Assist in Routing outgoing sales orders according to pre-existing route guidelines. Establish priorities and schedule deliveries in a manner consistent with customer service goals.

Responsibilities Include:

  • Assist in leading a team of CDL and non CDL Delivery Drivers, dispatch personnel and a mechanic.
  • Assist Transportation Manager in overseeing the day-to-day operations of the transportation department to include routing, field operations, dispatch, DOT compliance, safety, and recordkeeping.
  • Perform routing functions via Roadnet; maintain Roadnet database customer locations time windows and other information as directed by management.
  • Provide direction and exemplary leadership to direct reports; hire, train and manage performance of team in accordance with company goals, standards, and values.
  • Support Transportation Manager and HR with safety and DOT compliance, including maintenance of Driver Qualification (DQ) files.
  • Ensure compliance with Union Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA).
  • Review delivery tickets to select the correct route based on the destination and size of the shipments as well as customer needs for each delivery address.
  • Assist in Monitoring, controlling, and optimizing productivity by ensuring that each truck carries a full load. Schedule loads to minimize the use of third-party drivers.
  • Select specific trucks for each route based on volume and equipment availability.
  • Maintain daily dispatch log containing start times, driver, route number, and material handling equipment required for each delivery truck.
  • Assist in investigating customer complaints regarding lost or damaged merchandise or shortages in shipment to determine responsibility.
  • Schedule shipments to ensure compliance with DOT regulations and company policy. Ensure that all DOT regulations are enforced.
  • Assist in conducting Ride-A-Longs with drivers to ensure accuracy and compliance. Ability to provide strong leadership and coaching.
  • Perform routine filing and maintenance of records.
  • Additional responsibilities as assigned by manager.

The Ideal Candidate Will Have:

  • 3 - 5 years of experience in a transportation supervisory role, preferably in a distribution environment.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule as needed.
  • Ability to fill in for Router and Dispatcher as needed.
  • Strong working knowledge of FMSCA / DOT regulations and safety compliance measures.
  • Experience with Roadnet or comparable routing software; ability to learn all Daycon delivery routes to ensure efficient routing.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Products such as Excel and Word.
  • Union experience is a plus but not required.
  • Ability to stay customer focused while operating within company standards and protocols.
  • Excellent communication skills, verbally and in writing.
  • Strong organizational skills with ability to multi-task.
  • Ability to pass a pre-employment background check and drug test.
  • Valid Driver’s License and safe driving history; DOT Certification a plus but not required.

The pay range for this role is: $67,000-80,000/year.This range represents what the company reasonably expects topay an associatefor this role based on current market data, internal equity, and other business factors. The actual compensation offered may vary depending on factors such as relevant experience, qualifications, geographic location, and other considerations.
