POSITION HIGHLIGHTS

  • Full Time, 40 hours/week
  • Monday through Friday, 1st shift

THE ROLE

The Transportation Supervising Engineer reports to a Principal Engineer in the Division of Highway Design and manages all phases of complex highway projects including planning, NEPA, and design. Responsible for supervising engineering staff and/or consultants in highway project development and delivery.

Position Requirements

  • Active Professional Engineer (PE) licensure from the Connecticut Department of Consumer Protection.
  • Availability to travel and attend trainings, conferences, public meetings, etc. outside normal hours. Valid driver’s license required.

PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS

Supervises engineers and staff engaged in transportation engineering tasks in various specialties, including administration, design, drainage, electrical, and more.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

  • Supervises work of engineers, technicians, and clerical personnel.
  • Reviews plans, specifications, and studies related to highway, bridge, and related engineering projects.
  • Supervises research, field and office projects, and manages project development.
  • Prepares reports, standards, specifications, and fee schedules.
  • Schedules, assigns, reviews, and trains staff; conducts performance evaluations.
  • Acts as liaison with other agencies and officials.
  • Prepares technical reports and presentations.
  • Oversees consultant work and departmental projects.
  • Performs other related duties as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY

  • Knowledge of transportation engineering principles, practices, and policies.
  • Understanding of administrative and financial controls.
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, and supervisory skills.
  • Ability to analyze reports, interpret information systems, and supervise staff.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Eight (8) years of transportation engineering experience.
  • One (1) year of lead responsibility for complex projects, including bridge design, drainage, electrical, etc.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience managing highway design projects from start to finish, including PELs and NEPA.
  • Leadership and mentoring experience.
  • Managing consultant engineers in highway design projects.

Special Requirements

  • PE licensure from the Connecticut Department of Consumer Protection.
  • Possession of a valid Motor Vehicle Operator’s license.
  • Willingness to travel as needed.
