Responsibilities

  • Analyzes student transportation needs and adjusts bus routes and stops to promote safe, efficient, and cost-effective transportation services.
  • Develops and maintains transportation schedules that coordinate school starting and dismissal times, transportation availability, student needs, and other considerations.
  • Plans and coordinates transportation schedules for after-school activities, athletics, field trips, and other events.
  • Evaluates transportation requests and determines appropriate transportation arrangements.
  • Reviews and approves or denies requests for the use of District-contracted transportation vehicles.
  • Coordinates transportation services with District administrators, school personnel, transportation contractors, drivers, parents, students, and the community.
  • Participates in recruitment, screening, and selection for bus drivers employed by transportation contractors.
  • Coordinates CDL training and Pennsylvania school bus driver certification processes.
  • Interprets and applies federal, state, and local transportation requirements and District policies.
  • Exercises independent judgment in resolving transportation issues and knows when to escalate.
  • Investigates and resolves transportation concerns involving routes, stops, and service disruptions.
  • Communicates professionally with parents, residents, students, and stakeholders regarding transportation services.

Job Description

Job Summary


The position will effectively manage the Coatesville student transportation system, providing safe and efficient transportation for all Coatesville Area School District students.

  • Independently plans, develops, evaluates, and maintains efficient student transportation routes and stops for all public and non-public school students in accordance with District policies, state regulations, student needs, and operational requirements.

  • Analyzes student transportation needs and establishes, adjusts, and recommends modifications to bus routes and stops to promote safe, efficient, and cost-effective transportation services.

  • Develops and maintains transportation schedules that coordinate school starting and dismissal times, transportation availability, student needs, and other operational considerations.

  • Plans and coordinates transportation schedules and services for after-school activities, athletics, field trips, elementary band rehearsals, extracurricular activities, and other events approved by school administrators and the Board of School Directors.

  • Evaluates transportation requests and determines appropriate transportation arrangements based on established District policies, available resources, scheduling requirements, and operational needs.

  • Reviews and approves or denies requests for the use of District-contracted transportation vehicles in accordance with District policies, procedures, contractual requirements, and operational considerations.

  • Coordinates transportation services with District administrators, school personnel, transportation contractors, drivers, parents, students, and members of the community to resolve transportation concerns and ensure continuity of service.

  • Participates in the recruitment, screening, evaluation, and selection process for school bus drivers employed by District transportation contractors and makes recommendations regarding candidates based on District requirements, applicable regulations, qualifications, and operational needs.

  • Coordinates the application, scheduling, and completion of required training and certification processes for individuals seeking a Commercial Driver's License (CDL), required endorsements, and Pennsylvania school bus driver certification.

  • Interprets and applies applicable federal, state, and local transportation requirements, District policies, contractual requirements, and provisions of the Pennsylvania School Bus Drivers Manual in the administration of transportation services.

  • Exercises independent judgment in resolving routine and complex transportation issues and determines when matters require consultation with the Transportation Supervisor, District administration, transportation contractors, law enforcement, regulatory agencies, or other appropriate parties.

  • Investigates and resolves transportation concerns involving routes, stops, schedules, student transportation, driver assignments, vehicle availability, and service disruptions, escalating matters when appropriate.

  • Communicates professionally and diplomatically with parents, residents, students, administrators, contractors, and other stakeholders regarding transportation services, concerns, regulations, and operational decisions.

  • Monitors transportation operations and identifies opportunities to improve service delivery, efficiency, safety, communication, and compliance.

  • Maintains current knowledge of commercial driver licensing requirements, Pennsylvania school bus regulations, transportation practices, and applicable state and federal requirements.



Additional Functions


In addition to the foregoing essential job functions, the employee is required to perform the following additional duties, unless such a duty cannot be performed with or without reasonable accommodation.



  • Prepares, analyzes, and maintains monthly and annual transportation reports, including mileage, fuel consumption, vehicle utilization, repairs, transportation costs, and other operational data.

  • Collects, reviews, and analyzes transportation information required for state reports and ensures information is accurate, complete, and submitted within established timelines.

  • Monitors weather conditions, road conditions, traffic conditions, and other factors that may affect safe transportation operations and provides recommendations regarding school closings, delays, early dismissals, route modifications, or other transportation adjustments.

  • Develops and communicates transportation procedures and operational guidance to drivers, students, families, District personnel, and transportation contractors as appropriate.

  • Supports the administration and enforcement of District transportation policies and student transportation procedures, including addressing student conduct and safety concerns occurring on District transportation.

  • Monitors transportation contractor performance and communicates identified concerns, service deficiencies, safety issues, or compliance matters to the appropriate District administrator.

  • Participates in meetings, professional development activities, workshops, and seminars to maintain and enhance administrative, supervisory, regulatory, and transportation knowledge and skills.

  • Performs other transportation-related duties and responsibilities as assigned by the Transportation Supervisor or other designated District administrator.



Requirements and Qualifications


To successfully perform this position, a person must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The qualification requirements listed below represent minimum levels of educational achievement, training, skill and/or ability necessary.


Required Education: High School Diploma or GED, Bachelor’s degree preferred.


Required Skills and Knowledge:


General knowledge of the geographic area of the Coatesville Area School District, particularly the network of roadways preferred.


Administrative and supervisory skills.


Other skills and characteristics which the board of school directors may deem appropriate.

Position Type: Full-Time


Salary: $60,000 to $80,000 12 Month Full Time Position
