Job Description

Position: Transportation Logistics Specialist

Reports To: Director of Transportation

Salary Schedule / Grade: Refer to District Support Staff Salary Schedule

F.L.S.A Status: Non-Exempt

Summary

Under general supervision of the Executive Director of Transportation or delegate, the Logistics Specialist engages in the routing, dispatch, and the call center processes of the department as described in the essential duties and responsibilities below as well as established departmental guidelines and procedures. The Logistics Specialist also performs other related duties as required or assigned.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Respond to inquiries and research, handle, and resolve complaints and where appropriate, elevate issues to supervisors.
  • Read and interpret maps to provide directions, information and documentation for drivers, district staff, parents, and the public.
  • Use computerized software to develop, plan, and coordinate safe and economical regular and special routes by optimizing efficiency in route planning, scheduling, and updating.
  • Receive written, telephonic, and electronic requests for route changes and make appropriate adjustments.
  • Build and maintain effective relations with the central office and building staff.
  • Assist in creating excellent customer service that is responsive and sensitive to the needs of students, parents, and school staff.
  • Conduct or facilitate periodic on‑site reviews of bus routes including stops, turnaround points, driving time, mileage, bus loads, schedules, and other assessments of effectiveness and efficiency.
  • Publish routes and manage bus route locator data and software for parents and school staff.
  • When assigned, serve as the point of contact for transportation services outside of normal working hours.
  • Operate, maintain, and respond to two‑way radio and telephone communications and GPS navigation equipment between bus drivers and transportation supervision.
  • Assign substitute drivers to routes in emergencies/absences.
  • Maintain a daily log of information concerning bus operations.
  • Locate the responsible party to receive special education students when the parent is not present at a stop.
  • Dispatch all regular and special education buses and distribute information to bus drivers.
  • Ensure all routes and trips are assigned, scheduled, and covered each day by preparing and distributing routing information.
  • Inform all drivers of special requirements, road conditions, routing and all extraordinary conditions and assist in resolving routine service problems and emergency situations.
  • Coordinate field trips by posting field trips and preparing all trip sheets, maps and other vital driver information related to extra trips.
  • Able to rotate work hours.
  • Advise building staff and parents of route changes, bus changes, late arrivals, departures, & etc.
  • Operate a school bus when no other driver is available.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • Must be a U.S. citizen or have the legal right to work in the U.S.
  • Valid Commercial Driver's License with School Bus and Passenger Endorsements.
  • High School Diploma or Equivalent.
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in pupil transportation as a bus driver, dispatcher, and/or router.
  • Good knowledge of school bus operations and bus route scheduling.
  • Good knowledge of state laws and guidelines for transporting students.
  • Good knowledge of school locations and local streets and roadways.
  • Ability to plan, organize, meet deadlines and manage efficient and effective routing of school buses according to established guidelines.
  • Ability to read and interpret maps.
  • Ability to multi‑task, work independently, and with others in a close proximity.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with parents and school personnel.
  • Ability to use computer and applicable software programs; Microsoft Word, Excel, etc.
  • Ability to collect and organize detailed information and prepare necessary reports.
  • Ability to react effectively and calmly in emergencies.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Ability to establish and maintain positive and effective relations with parents and staff.
  • Effective oral and written communications with proper grammar; analytical ability, and knowledge and skill in the use of office technology and office software.
  • Strong understanding and history of successful customer service.
Physical Attributes/Demands

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit and is occasionally required to walk, stand, lift/carry, push/pull, balance, reach/handle objects, and perform repetitive motions. The employee may occasionally lift and/or move items weighing up to 50 lbs.

Work Environment

Work is performed generally in an office with occasional road trips required. Work may involve exposure to road hazards.

This position is subject to random drug testing under Department of Transportation guidelines and in compliance with the District’s Anti‑drug and alcohol policy.
