JOB TITLE: Transportation Specialist

DEPARTMENT: Transportation

REPORTS TO: Director of Transportation

FLSA STATUS: Exempt

EMPLOYMENT STATUS: Full Time 12 Month

MINIMUM JOB REQUIREMENTS:

Education: High School Diploma or GED Preferred; Class B Drivers License with Passenger and School Bus Endorsements Required.


Experience: 4 Years of experience driving a school bus preferred; 3 to 5 years of experience in a management or training role;


Skills: Advanced knowledge of student transportation and routing software, including GPS tracking, Telematics, Vehicle Maintenance, Vehicle Surveillance and GIS mapping systems.Ability to communicate appropriately with students, parents, and district staff. Understanding of district transportation policy and procedures. Manages staff in assigned areas of responsibility. Must be task-oriented and willing to lead others. Promotes a positive team atmosphere. Acts as a liaison between the Department and other Departments as well as the general public. Must be willing and able to cover any route.


SUMMARY:

Willing and able to assist drivers with issues pertaining to bus management and overall transportation issues. Responsible for the safe transport of the students to school. Will assist in various duties including routing, communications, student and bus management, activities, and fleet operations.


ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Possess the ability to drive any route assigned.

  • Discuss problems or questions with drivers.

  • Assist with route evaluations.

  • Assist with driver training.

  • Attend job fairs, back-to-school nights, and other events to recruit applicants.

  • Distribute hiring information to generate applicants.

  • Establish contacts and build rapport with organizations and individuals to generate applicants.

  • Work with the leadership staff to develop and maintain a comprehensive recruiting plan.

  • Motivate others with ongoing positive reinforcement and promote a team player concept.

  • Enforce all policies and procedures of the district and the Transportation department.

  • Attend all required meetings.

  • Create analytical reports.

  • Work in specialty positions when needed (i.e., routing, communications, student management, training, special needs, etc.).

  • Assist with emergency bus evacuations when needed.

  • Assist with the delivery of the transportation service evaluations to schools.

  • Provide and attend training classes as needed.

  • Any and all duties as assigned by the Director of Transportation or designee.

Ability to project a professional company image through in-person, phone, and electronic interaction. Ability to build and foster harmonious rapport and work cooperatively with District staff and the public while achieving the objectives and goals of the position. Ability to handle problematic and/or difficult situations professionally by communicating with the appropriate person.


ATTENDANCE STATEMENT:

Able to be in attendance for assigned responsibilities with 95% attendance.


ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS:

Exposure to extreme weather conditions including intense heat and cold. Possible exposure to bodily fluids.


PHYSICAL STANDARDS:


  • Ability to manipulate objects of up to 50 lbs for 20 feet is required

  • Must pass DOT physical and Drug Screening

  • Walking as required to access equipment and perform responsibilities

  • Sitting for the length of the assigned route

  • Use of hands and arms to assist with wheelchairs, setting brakes, foot pedals, etc.

  • Climbing and descending bus steps

  • Stooping, kneeling, and crouching as required for student care

  • Talking and hearing to communicate concerning job-related duties as assigned

  • Close vision (clear vision at 20 inches or less) with or without correction

  • Distance vision (clear vision at 20 feet or more) with or without correction

  • Color vision (ability to identify and distinguish colors)

  • Peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus
