Job summary

Camden County Schools Central Office is seeking a Transportation Supervisor to manage the district's school transportation program. This role reports to the Chief Operations Officer and oversees transportation department personnel.

The position requires a NC licensure-qualifying degree (Bachelor’s) with preference for a Master’s and a NC CDL with Bus Endorsement. Candidates should have experience in transportation management and employee supervision.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in education or related field qualifying for North Carolina licensure; Master’s degree preferred.
  • Experience in managing a school transportation department and supervising employees is preferred.
  • NC Commercial Driver License with Bus Endorsement.

POSITION DESCRIPTION

Transportation Supervisor

Reports to: Chief Operations Officer

Supervises: Transportation Department Personnel

Purpose: To manage the school system transportation program in accordance with the State Department of Public Instruction fleet management system and all federal, state, and local policies, rules, and regulations governing public school transportation.

Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree in education or a degree in a related area that qualifies for North Carolina licensure; Master’s degree preferred.

Experience in performing the full range of tasks associated with management of a school transportation department and management of employees preferred.

Special Requirements:

NC Commercial Driver License with Bus Endorsement.

Essential Job Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Determines the priority of work to be accomplished.

  • Schedules and assigns all mechanical repairs and preventive maintenance to garage personnel according to requirements detailed in fleet performance reports.
  • Assists in screening applicants and recommending personnel for employment in the transportation program; participates in the training and certification of fitness and competence for all bus drivers; monitors regular performance of bus drivers; and for just cause, takes appropriate action to terminate a bus driver’s employment.
  • Prepares an annual budget and supervises the expenditure of funds for personnel, materials, and supplies.
  • Proactively identifies and resolves transportation-related issues before they impact operations.
  • Supervises the administration of a fleet maintenance system for state and local vehicles.
  • Oversees the preparation and submission of reports necessary for school transportation.
  • Instructs mechanics in techniques and practices of automotive repair and maintenance.
  • Sees that repairs and services are completed in compliance with all safety and quality standards.
  • Assists in the diagnosis of complex mechanical problems and determines appropriate corrective action.
  • Assures the completion of a 30-day school bus inspection for all school buses and activity buses.
  • Coordinates TIMS efforts required to develop school bus routes.
  • Investigates and reports accidents involving school transportation equipment.
  • Confers as necessary with State Highway Department personnel to determine road conditions affecting school transportation.
  • Operates the computer management system as necessary.
  • Conducts seminars and safety updates for employees and students.
  • Communicates with parents to coordinate transportation arrangements, address inquiries, resolve service-related concerns, and support bus routing logistics.
  • Cultivates collaborative relationships with school building administrators and parents.
  • Fosters a welcoming and supportive environment for parents and employees.
  • Any other duties or program areas as assigned by supervisors.

Knowledge and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of federal, state, and local rules and regulations governing the operation of a school bus transportation system.
  • Knowledge of automotive service and repair principles and techniques.
  • Knowledge of methods of operating a school bus transportation system.
  • Ability to gather, analyze, and interpret data.
  • Knowledge of regulations regarding drug and alcohol testing.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with groups and individuals representing the schools and the community.

Salary Grade : NC14 or 15 ($4,382 - $ 7,560 depending on training, certifications, and experience)
