This is an exciting opportunity to perform seasonal road maintenance work for the Agency of Transportation (VTrans). This position is responsible for various tasks related to highway maintenance, such as repairing guardrails, cutting trees/brush, patching roads, picking litter, ditching, and more. These positions may work up to 40 hours per week depending on the needs of the district.
This position, Transportation Operations Technician I - Temporary (Job Requisition #52443), is open to all State employees and external applicants. This is a temporary position. Temporary work is typically for variable hours and is not expected to be full-time. The State does not guarantee 40 hours of work per week.

Duties require working in extreme outdoor weather conditions. All employees may be required to report to work outside of their area/work schedule and must be reachable by phone. Dangers are present when work is performed near heavy equipment, hazardous materials, and roadside litter. Employees may be exposed to blood and airborne pathogens. Hazards are always present when working on the roads as traffic passes, during emergencies such as floods, ice, snow, or hazardous materials. An incumbent must be able to use tools and equipment commonly used for maintenance work as well as lift materials. Participation in a random drug and alcohol-testing program is required prior to operation of vehicles or equipment. Considerable overtime work is required, particularly during the winter months.
No education or experience is required. Applicants must be at least 18 years old.
High school diploma or equivalent.
A valid driver's license is required. An incumbent must live within reasonable proximity of the assigned workstation. Possession of a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) is required for the successful completion of original probation. An incumbent must complete all VTTC required coursework within six months or be enrolled.
