Job summary

Waxahachie Independent School District is seeking an experienced Transportation Mechanic to perform major mechanical repairs on district vehicles with minimal supervision. The role requires diagnosing problems, inspecting repairs, and maintaining preventive records.

Responsibilities include engine and transmission work, electrical and cooling system checks, welding, and routine maintenance. The position is full-time, on-site in Waxahachie, TX with an auxiliary pay schedule and immediate start

Qualifications

• Five years of experience as a mechanic.
• Valid Texas commercial driver’s license (Class B).
• Vehicle Inspector Certificate, Mobile A/C, HVAC, ASE certificates are preferred.

Responsibilities

• Evaluate mechanical problems with diagnostic equipment.
• Inspect repairs completed by mechanics.
• Rebuild or repair major components including engines and transmissions.
• Check electrical and cooling systems and install heaters.
• Welding and minor body work as needed.
• Estimate time and materials for major repairs.
• Analyze engine performance and perform tune-ups when required.

Primary Purpose:

Perform major mechanical repairs with minimal supervision to ensure proper performance and safety of district vehicles.

Qualifications:

Education/Certification:

• Valid Texas commercial driver’s license (Class B)

Certifications Preferred

• Vehicle Inspector Certificate

• HVAC Certificate
• ASE Automobile Technician Certificate

Special Knowledge/Skills:

• Advanced knowledge of diesel and fuel engineer maintenance and repair
• Ability to diagnose mechanical problems and perform repairs independently
• Ability to operate equipment and tools involved in vehicle repair
• Ability to lift heavy equipment and vehicle parts
• Ability to pass alcohol and drug test
• Ability to pass required bus driver safety training

Maintenance and Repair:

• Evaluate mechanical problems in vehicles using diagnostic equipment.
• Help mechanics evaluate minor mechanical problems.
• Inspect repairs completed by mechanics.
• Rebuild, replace, or repair major vehicle components, assemblies, and systems including engines, transmissions, suspension, etc.
• Check and repair electrical and cooling systems.
• Install heaters and similar accessories.
• Do welding and perform minor body work.
• Estimate time and materials required to perform major repairs.
• Analyze engine performance and perform tune-ups as needed.
• Perform routine vehicle maintenance and preventive care.
• Maintain accurate, updated preventive maintenance records.

Safety:

• Operate tools, equipment, and machinery according to prescribed safety procedures.
• Follow established safety procedures and techniques to perform job duties including lifting, climbing, etc.
• Help keep shop, equipment, and tools in safe operating condition.
• Correct unsafe conditions in work area and report any conditions that are not correctable to supervisor immediately.
