Job summary

Enterprise City Schools is seeking a Transportation Mechanic to diagnose and repair school buses and related equipment. The role emphasizes safety, preventive maintenance, and timely service to keep fleet operations running smoothly.

You will work under the Transportation Shop Foreman, perform daily repairs, and maintain records of maintenance and inspections in accordance with state guidelines.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent is required; technical degree or apprenticeship preferred.
• Completion of a certified auto mechanic apprenticeship or four years' experience as auto/truck mechanic or six years as assistant mechanic in a school bus shop preferred.
• Possess and maintain a valid driver’s license.
• Must hold or obtain within six months a Class B commercial driver’s license with P and S endorsements and a School Bus Driver’s Certificate.
• Must hold or obtain within six months a School Bus Mechanic Certification.
• Ability to meet suitability criteria under Alabama laws for employment/certification.
• Ability to use technology to perform job responsibilities.
• Ability to follow verbal and written instructions with good interpersonal skills.
• Ability to prioritize tasks and meet deadlines.
• Willingness to work after hours, weekends, shift work, or holidays.

Job Title - Transportation Mechanic

Supervised by/Reports to: Transportation Shop Foreman

FLSA Status: Non-exempt

Job Goals

• Ensure proper performance and safety of all System vehicles; perform daily activities of vehicle repair/maintenance.

Qualifications

1. High school diploma or equivalent; Associates/Technical degree or higher, preferred.
2. Completion of a Certified Auto Mechanic Apprenticeship, or written verification of four (4) years experience as an auto/truck mechanic, or written verification of six (6) years experience as an assistant mechanic in a school bus shop.
3. Possess and maintain a valid driver’s license.
4. Must hold or obtain within six months from hire a valid Class "B" commercial driver’s license with "P" and "S" endorsements and a valid Alabama School Bus Driver's Certificate.
5. Must hold or obtain within six months from hire a School Bus Mechanic Certification.
6. Ability to meet the suitability criteria for employment and/or certification licensure under the Alabama Child Protection Act of 1999 and Act No. 2002-457.
7. Ability to use technology as required to perform job responsibilities.
8. Ability to carry out verbal and written instructions and demonstrate effective interpersonal skills.
9. Ability to prioritize tasks.
10. Ability to make estimates of time and material needed for efficient project completion.

Performance Responsibilities and Essential Functions

1. Demonstrates support for the school system and its vision, goals and priorities.
2. Accept and complete Transportation Shop Foreman’s assigned job and overall supervision.
3. Maintain safety at all times.
4. Maintain good relationships with drivers and other school personnel.
5. Accurately diagnose and repair school system transportation equipment.
6. Assume responsibility for the proper use of all equipment and parts received.
7. Report any abuse of vehicles and/or equipment to the Transportation Shop Foreman.
8. Exhibit skill and efficiency in performing routine and preventive maintenance to all vehicles and equipment.
9. Operate school board owned vehicles in accordance with state law and Board policies.
10. Promote high standards of safety and good housekeeping practices including: understanding laws and regulations regarding transportation and safety, ensuring safe operation of all tools and equipment.
11. Operate two-way radio equipment in a professional manner, responding to after-hours calls as needed.
12. Ability to engage in prolonged standing, stooping, kneeling, crawling, bending, turning and reaching.
13. Strength and agility to lift and carry objects weighing up to 50 pounds.
14. Ability to exert up to 75 pounds of force.
15. Engages in required orientations, trainings, safety instruction, and meetings as required for effective job performance and/or advancement.
16. Maintains appropriate confidentiality regarding school/workplace matters.
17. Reports potential problems, unusual events, or work irregularities to appropriate administrative or supervisory personnel.
18. Responds to inquiries, requests, constructive feedback, concerns and/or complaints in a timely and positive manner.
19. Maintains and submits reports, records, and correspondence in a timely and accurate manner.
20. Adheres to school system rules, administrative procedures, local Board policies, and state, federal, and local regulations.
21. Reports absences and takes leave in accordance with Board policies and procedures.
22. Performs other job-related duties as assigned by supervisor(s).

Terms of Employment: Twelve month position in accordance with the Board's salary schedule.

Evaluation: Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the State Department of Education and/or Enterprise City Board of Education policy on evaluation of classified personnel.
