Qualifications

• Completion of a certified auto mechanic apprenticeship or 5 years' experience as auto/truck mechanic.

• Possess Alabama bus driver certificate and CDL.
• Ability to obtain Alabama School Bus Mechanic certification.
• Must pass suitability criteria under Alabama Child Protection Act.
• Must pass drug tests as required by policy.
• Competent written and verbal communication skills.
• Ability to operate diagnostic equipment and shop tools.
• Ability to diagnose problems and implement preventive maintenance.
• Physical strength to lift up to 50 pounds; ability to exert up to 75 pounds of force.
• Ability to work indoors and outdoors year-round in various conditions.
• Willingness to work after hours, weekends, or holidays when necessary.
• Must maintain punctuality and regular attendance.

REPORTS TO: Transportation Director

FLSA STATUS: Non-Exempt

TERMS: 240-day position paid following the board-approved salary schedule

JOB GOAL:

• Provide excellent vehicle maintenance services for all Pike Road School buses and other vehicles to ensure safe and efficient transportation for students and employees.
• Assist transportation personnel in diagnosing, preventing, and correcting transportation problems or unsafe conditions.
• Assist in managing school system vehicles, fiscal and material resources, and transportation personnel.

QUALIFICATIONS:

1. Completion of a certified auto mechanic’s apprenticeship; or written proof of at least five (5) years experience as an auto or truck mechanic; or written proof of three consecutive years experience as a mechanic’s helper in a school bus shop maintaining buses for pupil transportation.
2. Maintain a current Department of Transportation (DOT) physical as required by Board policy.
3. Possess and maintain a valid Alabama bus driver certificate and commercial driver’s license (CDL).
4. Ability to obtain Alabama School Bus Mechanic certification.
5. Ability to meet suitability criteria for employment and/or certification/licensure under the Alabama Child Protection Act of 1999 and Act No. 2002-457.
6. Must pass and is subject to drug tests as required by federal and state law and the Board's policies regarding drug testing, operating school-owned vehicles, transporting students, and all applicable policies.
7. Competent written and verbal communication skills.
8. Ability to operate and maintain needed tools and diagnostic equipment.
9. Ability to diagnose mechanical problems, implement preventive maintenance programs, and follow safety and recommended rules for efficient shop operations.
10. Physical strength and agility to lift and carry objects weighing up to 50 pounds.
11. Ability to exert up to 75 pounds of force.
12. Ability, agility, and stamina to engage in prolonged sitting or standing, stooping, kneeling, crawling, bending, turning, and reaching.
13. Ability and willingness to work indoors and outdoors year-round in noisy, crowded environments and inclement weather.
14. Ability and willingness to work after hours, weekends, or holidays when necessary.
15. Ability to be punctual and in regular attendance.
16. Such alternative qualifications as the Board may require.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

1. Accept and complete the Supervisor’s assigned job and overall supervision.
2. Maintain safety standards at all times.
3. Maintain good relationships with drivers and other school employees.
4. Accurately diagnose and repair school system transportation equipment.
5. Assume responsibility for the proper use of all parts received.
6. Report any abuse of vehicles and/or equipment to the Transportation Director.
7. Exhibit skill and efficiency in performing routine and preventive maintenance to all vehicles and equipment.
8. Maintain work hours per Board policy.
9. Perform monthly safety inspections on buses as required by the State of Alabama.
10. Perform maintenance and body repair on all vehicles and equipment owned by the Pike Road Schools Board of Education.
11. Assist in developing written maintenance records for all vehicles the school system owns.
12. Perform routine maintenance and service on vehicles and equipment, including video systems, at regularly-scheduled intervals.
13. Maintain service bay in a clean, neat, and safe manner.
14. Keep service truck washed as needed and serviced at intervals as needed as established by the transportation department.
15. Maintain an accurate inventory of supplies and equipment as assigned.
16. Properly uses and maintains responsibility for the school system's tools, equipment, and material resources.
17. Request supplies and equipment needed to carry out duties and assigned projects.
18. Perform road call duty as needed.
19. Respond promptly to call out in emergencies.
20. Perform all mechanical maintenance services with priority on student and employee safety; removes from service any bus or other vehicle that is unsafe to operate.
21. Return buses or other vehicles to active service only after identified maintenance problems have been corrected.
22. Engage in work-related training to increase knowledge and skills as directed and/or for advancement.
23. Perform duties in a courteous, professional manner.
24. Maintain appropriate confidentiality regarding school/workplace matters.
25. Demonstrate initiative in identifying potential problems and/or opportunities for improvement in areas of responsibility.
26. Report potential problems, unusual events, or work irregularities to appropriate administrative or supervisory personnel.
27. Respond to inquiries, requests, constructive feedback, concerns, and/or complaints promptly and positively.
28. Maintain and submits reports, records, and correspondence promptly and accurately.
29. Adhere to school system rules, administrative procedures, local Board policies, and state, federal, and local regulations.
30. Report absences and takes leave following Board policies and procedures.
31. Perform other job-related duties as assigned by Supervisor(s).

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Heavy Work: Exerting up to 75 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently; and/or up to 10 pounds of force as needed to move objects.

EVALUATION: Job performance will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the State Department of Education and/or Pike River Board of Education policy on evaluation of classified personnel.
