Job summary

Steel Dynamics, Inc. is seeking a Fleet Operations Manager to lead the SouthWest division's transportation staff, oversee dispatch, maintenance, and payroll, and ensure safety and timely service to customers.

Responsibilities include managing all transportation personnel, maintaining equipment within budget, complying with DOT regulations, negotiating third‑party freight rates, and coordinating with Marketing and Operations.

Qualifications

• College degree in business or logistics or five years of fleet management experience.
• Strong knowledge of federal and state DOT laws and regulations.
• Proven ability to manage a medium-sized fleet and lead a team.
• Excellent problem-solving, time management and communication skills.
• Experience in a union environment is preferred but not required.

Overview

Manage divisional fleet operations including, dispatching, dispatch personnel, drivers, maintenance, cost and equipment.

Responsibilities

• Manage all transportation staff (drivers, payroll, dispatch, admin, and maintenance) for SouthWest division.
• Responsible for the preventative maintenance and repair to all transportation equipment, ensuring that the cost meets budget limits.
• Operate fleet in compliance with all federal and state DOT regulations as well as SDI/OmniSource safety rules and regulations.
• Strive for excellent customer service and support through dispatching to ensure prompt service to customer locations as well as order fulfillment to end users.
• Communicate effectively and foster a positive working relationship with other internal departments (i.e. Marketing and Operations).
• Negotiate 3rd party freight rates.
• Manage utilization, i.e. reviewing rates on regular basis, monitoring driver performance, efficiency, etc.
• Verify payroll for accuracy.
• Other projects as assigned.

Qualifications

Required

• College degree in business / logistics or five years of experience operating a medium size fleet. The five years must include at least half of that time in a managerial role for that fleet.
• Strong working knowledge of federal and state DOT laws and regulations
• Proven knowledge of transportation equipment operation and routing
• Excellent problem solving skills, with ability to resolve in the safest and most effective manner
• Experience managing in a union environment is preferred, but not required
• Intermediate level experience with Micro Soft Office products
• Strong written and verbal communication skills
• Proven ability to be organized with excellent time management skills

Preferred

• Previous experience with SAI, Carrierweb and OTM software
