Job summary

The South Carolina Department of Transportation seeks an Assistant Resident Maintenance Engineer to support organizing, planning, and coordinating the county maintenance unit’s activities and to ensure efficient operations during normal and emergency conditions.

Responsibilities include supervising maintenance contracts, preparing quantities, inspecting work, processing payments, and contributing to the county Business Plan.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Engineering Technology, or Construction Science and Management and three years of engineering or construction management work experience or an approved acceptable equivalence.
• Experience supervising personnel and implementing performance management systems (EPMS) and related HR processes.
• Occasional travel and ability to work outside normal business hours or respond to emergencies.

Responsibilities

• Assist Resident Maintenance Engineer in organizing, planning and coordinating the county maintenance unit activities.
• Ensure the unit operates effectively and efficiently during normal and emergency operations.
• Manage maintenance contract processes, including preparing quantities, inspecting work, and processing payments.
• Assist in creating and implementing the county Business Plan and coordinating maintenance plans to meet business goals.
• Supervise personnel matters including EPMS reviews, position descriptions, disciplinary actions, and other HR procedures.
• Supervise the encroachment permit process and inspection activities in accordance with engineering directives for all roads in the county.
• Assist in researching data and preparing reports for budgets, resurfacing, and long-term programs.
• Investigate public complaints, work requests, and damage claims and recommend corrective actions.
