The Illinois Association of School Administrators is seeking a school transportation maintenance professional to service and repair district buses, maintain required records, and help keep the fleet compliant with state standards.
The role involves performing bus inspections, routine maintenance, and transporting vehicles for inspections as needed. Strong mechanical skills and a valid driving record are essential.
Major Responsibility No. 1: Vehicle Maintenance
Key Duties:
Service all vehicles according to service schedule, keeping them in efficient working condition. (Grease, oil, and filter change)
Repair mechanical breakdowns
Regularly inspect exhaust, fuel, and cooling systems, carrier bearings, U-joints, etc. and make necessary repairs as directed
Check all tires, batteries, etc., prior to resuming service after vacation periods
Report inventory of oil, filters, and most needed spare parts, etc. to Transportation Director
Perform regular cleaning of the school-owned vehicles
Perform inspection and any needed repairs of the brake system on the school buses as required on the IDOT inspection report as directed
Major Responsibility No. 2: Shop Maintenance
Key Duties:
Store supplies and parts in an orderly system
Clean the bus garage, as time permits
Be responsible for the security of the garage and equipment
Major Responsibility No. 3: Record Keeping
Key Duties:
Maintain accurate records of bus service for state and federal transportation reports
Submit accurate records of vehicle and service expenses to Transportation Director
Submit records needed to pay bills and complete state and/or federal reports to Transportation Director as requested
Major Responsibility No. 4: Miscellaneous
Key Duties:
Transport vehicles to state inspections, as directed
Transport vehicles for warranty work during the warranty period as scheduled
Respond to phone and radio-to-garage messages
Pick-up and deliver materials/supplies within and outside of district boundaries as requested
Complete other duties as assigned by Transportation Director
Minimum Qualifications:
Mechanical expertise
A satisfactory driving record as revealed through checks with the National Driver Register Service and the Secretary of State's Driver Services Section, a satisfactory work history and a record free of criminal convictions
Must be able to do basic physical and visual activities
5. Be able to drive a school bus when needed.
Must have a background in vehicle maintenance and experience as a mechanic. be able to pass a criminal background check and be able to pass requirements to earn bus driver's license.
