Job summary

ReNEW Schools in Merrillville, IN seeks a Transportation Maintenance Technician to oversee repair and preventive maintenance of the district's school bus fleet. You will review repairs with the Director of Transportation, maintain records, and ensure safe operation of all equipment.

The role requires a high school diploma, ASE certification preferred with 3+ years of related experience, diesel maintenance background, and Indiana CDL-A preferred. Strong computer skills and teamwork are essential.

  • Valid Indiana driver’s license; CDL-A preferred.
  • Ability to operate all equipment used in the transportation department.

Responsibilities

  • Review transportation repairs and assignments with the Director of Transportation.
  • Keeps and maintains all related records for all performed service and work.
  • Models and practices safe work habits.
  • Assist in the maintenance of parts and supply inventory.
  • Assign bus repairs to the Class II mechanics.
  • Monitor fuel levels and order fuel as needed.
  • Perform mandatory State monthly fuel tank leakage reports.
  • Inspections per Indiana State Police guidelines for vehicles transporting students.
  • Assist other mechanics and maintain good relations with drivers and staff.
  • Perform system repairs on brakes, transmissions, electrical, cooling, and carburetion systems.

Job description

SCHEDULE: 8 Hours

QUALIFICATIONS
  • Must have a current online application on file with the Corporation,
  • High school diploma; A.S.E. certification preferred with a minimum of three (3) years related experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience,
  • Background in diesel engine maintenance.
  • Must possess a valid Indiana drivers license and/orwilling to obtain a CDL-A license
  • Able to operate all equipment currently in use in the transportation department,
  • Computer literate to include the use of Microsoft office products,
  • Proven experience in maintaining school buses, both chassis and body
  • Knowledge of school bus standards and school bus inspection requirements,
  • Must have a demonstrated positive work attitude and verifiable interactions with other employees,
RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Review transportation repairs and assignments with the Director of Transportation,
  • Keeps and maintains all related records for all preformed service and work,
  • Models and practices safe work habits,
  • Assist in the maintenance of parts and supply inventory,
  • Assign bus repairs to the Class II mechanics,
  • Monitor fuel levels in holding tanks and order fuel when necessary,
  • Perform mandatory State monthly fuel tank leakage reports,
  • Performs inspections per Indiana State Police guidelines for vehicles licensed to transport students,
  • Assists other mechanics and maintains a harmonious relationship with drivers and other corporation employees,
  • Performs system repairs on brakes, transmissions, electric systems, cooling systems, and carburetion systems on all vehicles normally maintained by the transportation department,
  • Completes appropriate work orders for transportation building(s) maintenance,
  • Maintains preventative maintenance schedules for school bus fleet and notifies drivers ofscheduled maintenance needs,
  • Work with the Director of Transportation in the development of topics for the yearly driver orientation meeting,
  • Records and file bus maintenance work orders in a timely manner,
  • Other duties as assigned by the Director of Transportation.
