Job summary

Township High School District 214 Community Education Foundation in Central Office- Joyce School seeks a School Fleet Mechanic to maintain safe operations of district vehicles and to repair school buses and passenger vehicles under the supervision of the Director of Facilities.

Responsibilities include performing preventive maintenance, diagnosing mechanical and electrical issues, repairing brakes, engines and exhaust, servicing campus cars and SUVs, conducting safety inspections, keeping logs,

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED is required.
  • Strong knowledge of diagnostic tools used in troubleshooting.
  • School bus and/or Activity bus driver preferred.
  • Valid Motor Vehicle Operator's license upon hire.

School Fleet Mechanic
Position Purpose

Under the direct supervision of the Director of Facilities, to maintain safe operations of all district vehicles; repair school buses and passenger vehicles.

Essential Job Functions
  • Perform routine preventive maintenance on district fleet vehicles.
  • Diagnose mechanical and electrical issues.
  • Repair brake, engine, and exhaust systems.
  • Service district cars, vans, and SUVs.
  • Conduct mandatory safety inspections.
  • Maintain accurate maintenance logs.
  • Respond to roadside vehicle breakdowns.
  • Keep shop equipment clean and safe.
  • Prepares and maintains records to document work and repairs completed.
Additional Duties

Performs other related tasks as assigned by supervisor.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Knowledge of fundamental tools, materials, practices, maintenance, methods and procedures in automotive and diesel repair.
  • Knowledge of diagnostic tools used in troubleshooting and resolving automotive and diesel issues.
  • Knowledge of occupational safety and health laws and regulations.
  • Ability to follow oral or written work orders from supervisor, and to coordinate work with others.
  • Ability to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral or diagrammatic form.
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide all units of measure.
  • Ability to describe orally or in writing maintenance or repair problems as needed.
  • Ability to troubleshoot, problem solve and resolve automotive and diesel repair.
  • Ability to report work orally or in writing to supervisor as required.
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with students, staff and others contacted in the course of work.
Safety Requirements
  • Follows all applicable safety rules, procedures and regulations governing the proper use of tools and power equipment used.
  • Wears appropriate safety gear.
Travel Requirements

Frequent travel between schools, or between schools and central offices, may be required.

Physical and Mental Demands, Work Hazards
  • Ability to withstand heights and work in crawl spaces.
  • Typical risks associated with using tools of the trade.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Occasional strenuous physical work.
  • Occasional work in poor weather conditions, including heat, cold, rain, or snow.

Qualifications Profile
