Job summary

State of South Carolina, Department of Transportation, is seeking personnel to assist with roadside inspections and maintenance coordination. You will help conduct inspections for contracts involving mowing, vegetation, or tree removal, and input daily HMMS reports for contract preparation.

The role includes guardrail and culvert inspections, assisting with permits, answering inquiries, and supporting during inclement weather or emergencies. Overtime and irregular hours may be required.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent is required or an approved acceptable equivalence.
  • 1 year of related experience is required or equivalence.
  • Physical and safety demands may be required.
  • Ability to work overtime, nights, and weekends during emergencies.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in conducting inspections for contracts involving roadway mowing, vegetation, or tree removal where field measurements for payment are needed.
  • Input daily work reports in HMMS and compile information to be let for contract.
  • Perform guardrail inspections, culvert inspections, and assist with day/night road inspections.
  • Assist office staff with monitoring maintenance communications and answering phones; assist roadway inspector in highway/bridge condition checks.
  • Assist with permits as workload requires and during staffing constraints.
  • Support emergency and inclement weather operations, possibly extended hours or 12-hour shifts.

Job description

Responsibilities


  • Assists in conducting inspections for moderate level contracts such as roadway mowing, vegetation or tree removal, street sweeping, etc. where field measurements for payment are required.

  • Inputs daily work reports in HMMS computer program and/or HMMS contract module. Compiles information to be let for contract.

  • Performs guardrail inspections, culvert inspections and assist with day and nighttime road inspections.

  • Assists office staff in the monitoring of the maintenance radio, answering maintenance office telephones and assisting customers. Assists roadway inspector in inspecting the condition of highways and bridges.

  • Assists with permits when necessary or required due to the workload and/or staffing.

  • Assists with emergency and inclement weather operations, may include being available for extended working hours or 12-hour shifts.


Qualifications

A high school diploma and one (1) year of experience that is related to the area of employment; or an approved acceptable equivalence.


Physical Demands

The physical demands for the essential functions involves frequent bending, kneeling, stooping and lifting up to 50 lbs. Walking for extended periods, treading rough terrain, working in close proximity to motoring traffic, and in natural environmental hazards. May require occasional exposure to noise. May require working outside of normal work schedules and weekends.
