Job summary

The South Carolina Department of Transportation is seeking a Maintenance Assistant in Aiken to assist with field inspections for roadway projects, review encroachment permits, and conduct routine road inspections. The role requires lifting up to 50 lbs and working outdoors in all weather conditions.

The position demands a high school diploma or equivalent, at least one year of related experience, and a valid driver's license. Flexibility for inclement weather shifts and emergencies is expected.

Qualifications

• A valid motor vehicle operator’s license is required.

Responsibilities

• Assists in conducting inspections for moderate level contracts such as roadway mowing, vegetation, tree removal, street sweeping, etc. where field measurements for payment are required.
• Assists in reviewing and recommending moderate level encroachment permits for approval.
• Inspects residential encroachment permits.
• Performs routine inspections of roadways to include high/low shoulders, pavement markings, signs, potholes, ditches and other roadway defects.
• Inspects traffic control on maintenance projects.
• Performs duties during inclement weather.
• Performs other related duties as assigned.

Minimum And Additional Requirements

A high school diploma and one (1) year of experience that is related to the area of employment; or an approved acceptable equivalence. A valid motor vehicle operator’s license is required.

The physical demands for the essential functions of this position involve bending, stooping, reaching, twisting, climbing, balancing, kneeling, pushing, pulling, grasping and physically manipulating objects of varying size, shape, weight, and material. Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. This position requires walking for extended periods, treading rough and uneven terrain, and working in close proximity to motoring traffic and natural environmental hazards. May be required to work outside of normal work schedule, especially during inclement weather and/or other departmental-related emergencies. Frequently exposed to outside environment in all weather conditions, noise, and oil or grease on a daily basis.
