Job summary

Alliant Engineering is seeking a Transportation Engineering Intern in Minneapolis to contribute to real-world transportation projects and learn from experienced engineers. You’ll assist with roadway design, traffic planning, and drainage design while gaining exposure to state, county, and municipal projects.

Ideal candidates are pursuing a Civil Engineering degree, possess strong communication skills, and are eager to learn design software tools such as MicroStation or AutoCAD.

Qualifications

  • Actively pursuing a Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering (or related engineering field).
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong technical and problem solving skills.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications, including Excel and Word.
  • Exposure to or interest in learning engineering design software such as MicroStation, OpenRoads Designer, AutoCAD, or Civil 3D.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to producing accurate, high-quality work.
  • Ability to manage multiple assignments, prioritize responsibilities, and meet deadlines.
  • Self-motivated, dependable, and eager to learn in a collaborative team environment.
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with preliminary and final design of projects.
  • Perform design computations and analyses.
  • Assist with preparation of engineering reports and supporting documents.
  • Assist in the preparation of construction drawings, specifications and cost estimates.
  • Coordinate design decisions with other engineering disciplines.
  • Plan, coordinate, and execute work in a safe, timely, cost-effective and compliant manner.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

The Impact You’ll Have:

As a Transportation Engineering Intern, you’ll have the opportunity to contribute to real-world transportation projects that shape the communities where we live and work. Working alongside experienced engineers, you’ll gain exposure to a variety of state, county, and municipal projects. Depending on project needs and your interests, you may support highway design, city and county roadway projects, or maintenance of traffic (MOT). Your work may include roadway design, traffic control planning, pedestrian and bicycle accommodations, drainage design, and other features that help create safe, efficient, and accessible transportation networks.

Responsibilities:

Internship begins May 2027 and will conclude in August 2027.

The pay rate for this position is expected to be $25.00 per hour, depending on experience and qualifications.
