Job summary

Westwood Professional Services is seeking a Transportation Engineering Intern to join its roadway design team. The role focuses on supporting highway and multimodal projects for DOTs and municipalities, allowing practical application of civil engineering coursework.

The intern will learn industry standards while assisting Senior Engineers in roadway plans, profiles, and construction documents, building proficiency in AutoCAD Civil 3D, OpenRoads, and related design tools.

Qualifications

• Currently enrolled in an accredited undergraduate Civil Engineering program or related field.
• Effective verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to interact professionally with clients, management, and design team members.
• Willingness to learn in a flexible, cross-disciplinary work environment.
• Willingness to attend site visits and perform work in outdoor field conditions on occasion.
• Valid driver's license and reliable transportation.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.

Responsibilities

• Assist with preparation of roadway plan and profile sheets, cross sections, and typical sections for highway and roadway projects.
• Design, prepare, check working drawings, layouts, and estimates using engineering software.
• Support quantity calculations, cost estimates, and construction document preparation for transportation infrastructure projects.
• Help review geometric design elements against state DOT design criteria.
• Develop an understanding of client interests and help identify approaches to address client concerns in project work.
• Coordinate with internal and external team members across public infrastructure projects to ensure effective communication and progress.
• Travel to project sites to gather field data and interface directly with clients and public agency staff.
