Job summary

Bolton & Menk, Inc. in Duluth, MN seeks an entry-level Design Engineer, EIT, to support our Transportation team. The role focuses on assisting project managers in design and construction activities for transportation projects, with May 2026 graduates welcome and 1–3 years of EIT experience considered.

You will perform basic design computations, assist with plans and specs, and help with traffic studies and ITS-related design. Travel is expected.

Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering from an accredited college.
Certified Engineer-in-Training or able to obtain within 12 months of hire.
Prior experience in either infrastructure design and/or construction observation.
Working knowledge and skills in CAD and design software (i.e., AutoCAD Civil3D, MicroStation).
Developing knowledge of specialized traffic software (i.e., SYNCHRO, SIMTraffic, Arcady, VISSIM).
Requires frequent travel during construction season.
Possess a valid driver’s license as travel to various facilities and job sites may be required.

Responsibilities

Assist Project Engineers with design and construction phase activities on transportation projects.
Perform basic design computations, preliminary layout and design, research and prepare rough drafts of preliminary reports and feasibility studies.
Assist with project plans and specifications, preparing cost and quantity take-off estimates.
Assists with traffic corridor studies related to traffic operations, traffic safety, modal integration and access management.
Assist with design of traffic control devices including traffic signals, signing and pavement markings, roadway lighting, ITS, work zones, and detours.
Construction observation activities may include performing construction staking, documenting activities, measuring and testing, and coordinating with contractors and city staff.
