Job Description

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:

Length of position: 12 months

Hours: Varied work shifts between 6:00 A.M- 6:00 P.M.

JOB DESCRIPTION

SUMMARY

Performs complex management and supervisory work. Management work includes coordinating day student bus transportation, other campus vehicle use, and related motor pool fleet maintenance. Supervisory work includes supervising department staff, maintaining schedules, controlling budget, transportation of students and staff, and improving program effectiveness. The Transportation Coordinator works under general supervision with wide latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment. Maintains a flexible work schedule. Infrequent operation of buses and other school vehicles is possible.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Management/Supervision

  • Assures safe operation of fleet
  • Recruits, trains, and supervises personnel and makes sound recommendations about placement, retention, and dismissal.
  • Supervises, assigns, schedules, and monitors work of staff including timekeeping.
  • Develops and conducts and/or coordinates training as needed.
  • Recommends promotions, demotions, and disciplinary actions as appropriate and evaluates job performance of employees to ensure effectiveness.
  • Reviews student behavior reports and conducts conferences with school administrative personnel and drivers on student management concerns.
  • Develops and maintains positive staff morale within the department.
  • Responds appropriately to Transportation Department personnel issues.
  • Conducts investigations of reported and/or suspected violations of statutes and agency rules.
  • Confirms that all driver qualifications are current at all times.
  • Assists with promoting a positive, safe, caring environment for students.

Administrative

  • Develops policies and procedures as required.
  • Compiles and analyzes data and reports as required.
  • Sends for and evaluates driver's Motor Vehicle Reports (MVRs) annually.
  • Prepares, interprets, and disseminates information on transportation programs and procedures.
  • Prepares correspondence and responds to requests for information regarding the transportation program, regulations, policies, and procedures.
  • Coordinates work between organizational units of the agency; local, state, and federal agencies; and private organizations.
  • Responds to requests from parents in a timely manner.
  • Develops, coordinates, and maintains record-keeping and filing systems.
  • Attends professional growth activities to keep abreast of innovative techniques in transportation.
  • Prepares, processes, and maintains all documentation required to verify CDL medical certification testing of drivers.
  • Assists in preparation, management, and justification of the department budget, checkbook, and credit card logs.
  • Supervises and directs a comprehensive program of school vehicle maintenance and repair.
  • Prepares specifications for equipment and supplies, reviews bids, and recommends appropriate purchases.
  • Monitors the purchase of school transportation vehicles, tires, and automotive parts.
  • Prepares, reviews, and revises departmental job descriptions.
  • Develops and maintains departmental handbook updates annually, which is distributed and signed by employees.

Daily Operations

  • Manages daily bus activities and prioritizes work assignments.
  • May drive bus route as needed.
  • Performs driver and route audits to manage route accuracy and times.
  • Conducts random inspections of all route buses for cleanliness.

Reporting

  • Completes the Texas Education Agency School Transportation Operations Report and submits it in a timely manner on an annual basis.
  • Completes the Texas Education Agency School Transportation Route Services Report and submits it in a timely manner on an annual basis.
  • Assures compliance with departmental procedures, campus policies, state regulations, and other laws, rules, and regulations related to the transportation of students.
  • Completes other requested reports in a timely manner.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Must possess a valid Class B Commercial driver’s license with a P & S endorsement issued by the State of Texas.
  • Must maintain a good driving record as defined by TXDPS.
  • Must successfully complete an annual School Bus Drivers Physical Examination.
  • Must submit to and test negative on all required drug and/or alcohol tests.
  • Must possess valid Texas School Bus Drivers Certification.
  • At least two years in a supervisory or leadership capacity in the relevant field.
  • Minimum of 5 years experience as a bus driver.
  • Sign Language: The ultimate required proficiency level for the position using the levels designated in the Signed Communication Proficiency Interview (SCPI) is ADVANCED. Must have at least a minimum level of INTERMEDIATE.

Desirable Qualifications

  • Experience in the operation of school buses or other large commercial vehicles.
  • Proficient sign communication skills.
  • 3+ years of supervisory experience in school bus transportation operations.
  • Knowledge in the use of Transfinder Automated Routing software, and additional Transfinder programs such as Trip Finder and View Finder.
  • Knowledge in the use of the Angel Trax school bus camera system.
  • Experience contacting the Department of Public Safety to obtain Motor Vehicle Records (MVRs).
  • Familiarity with the Office of Vehicle Fleet Management (OVFM).
  • Experience using various office software such as PowerSchool, CAPPS, TEAL, Google Calendar, and Microsoft Office Products.
  • Experience using both Mac and PC Platforms.
