Job summary

Leidos seeks a Transportation Data Scientist at the junior to mid-level to support FHWA-funded projects at the intersection of AI, data science, and transportation. This position is based on-site in McLean, VA and offers the chance to develop and deploy AI/ML models for vehicle load classification, crash prediction, and data ecosystems.

Required: Master’s degree (Ph.D. preferred), 2+ years of non-academic data science experience, and eligibility for a Public Trust clearance.

Qualifications

• Minimum 2+ years non-academic data science and AI/ML experience.
• Hands-on AI solution development experience.
• Experience with multimodal data (imagery, sensor data, time-series).
• Ability to work with stakeholders and present technical concepts.
• Willingness to travel up to 20%.
• Eligibility for a Public Trust clearance (3 years residency in the US).
• US work authorization.

Responsibilities

• Conduct data and literature reviews for AI methods and datasets.
• Prepare and integrate datasets for AI use cases (ETL, multimodal).
• Contribute to design, development, deployment of AI/ML models.
• Evaluate model performance and robustness under varied conditions.
• Support stakeholder outreach and workshops with state DOTs and agencies.
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams to align with USDOT goals.
• Contribute to monthly progress reporting and risk mitigation.
