Job summary

Burns & McDonnell via 1898 & Co. seeks a Transmission Planning Consultant to perform advanced studies and support electric grid projects across North America.

You will deliver technical and economic analyses to guide client decisions, develop life-cycle cost assumptions, and support business development while aligning with regulatory requirements. The role requires leadership, strong communication, and proficiency with PSS/E, PSLF, EMTP/ATP, PSCAD, SKM, ETAP, and Promod.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in engineering or related degree with ABET accreditation and 3 years of related experience
• Master's degree in engineering or business with 2 years experience
• PhD in engineering with 1 year experience
• Experience with electric utility operations, planning or consulting
• Experience with power system planning and operations including NERC/FERC compliance and interconnection processes
• Knowledge of major ISOs/Regional transmission operators and market regions

Responsibilities

• Perform a broad range of studies including power flow, transient stability, transfer capability, short-circuit, and voltage analysis
• Evaluate regulatory conditions and risks (NERC, FERC, regional requirements) and conduct production costing and risk assessment
• Independently execute transmission system planning studies using industry-standard software (PSS/E, PSLF, EMTP/ATP, PSCAD, SKM, ETAP, Promod)
• Develop technical assumptions for life-cycle cost analysis (CapEx, O&M, performance, forecasts)
• Analyze engineering, financial and economic data to provide actionable client insights
• Prepare technical reports and presentations summarizing findings and recommendations
• Support project managers with deliverables, proposals and business development
• Participate in client meetings and technical reviews; comply with policies and quality standards
