Job summary

MISO is seeking a Transmission Planning Engineer to support the Expansion Planning team. The role involves studying transmission planning scenarios, reliability assessments, and participating in MTEP cycles to improve grid reliability across North America.

You will collaborate with members and stakeholders, mentor teammates, and contribute to initiatives that evolve the energy landscape while meeting NERC compliance requirements.

Qualifications

  • ABET/equivalent electrical engineering degree.
  • Experience in transmission planning preferred.
  • Familiarity with NERC standards.

Responsibilities

  • Build partnerships with MISO members and internal teams to support the MTEP cycle.
  • Contribute to steady‑state and transient stability studies for reliable planning.
  • Own key NERC compliance activities including standards such as TPL‑001‑4/5.
  • Develop technical expertise while contributing to projects shaping the North American grid.

Job description

Overview

As a Transmission Planning Engineer on our Expansion Planning team, you’ll work with MISO members and industry stakeholders to develop transmission solutions that become part of the MISO Transmission Expansion Plan (MTEP), a critical long‑term planning initiative.

You’ll conduct a range of transmission planning studies and reliability assessments to keep the grid reliable as the energy landscape evolves. Your work includes steady‑state, transient, and voltage stability analysis; project reviews; compliance assessments; and technical support for multiple planning initiatives.

Beyond the technical work, you’ll improve planning processes, collaborate across departments, mentor teammates, and address complex transmission planning challenges.

Responsibilities

In the first year you will:

  • Build strong partnerships with MISO members and internal teams, supporting a successful MTEP planning cycle.
  • Contribute to steady‑state and transient stability studies that support reliable system planning.
  • Take ownership of key NERC compliance responsibilities, including activities supporting standards such as TPL‑001‑4/5 and other applicable planning requirements.
  • Continue to develop your technical expertise while contributing to projects that shape the future of the North American electric grid.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering Technology, Electrical & Computer Engineering, Electrical & Electronic Engineering, or Electronics & Computer Engineering Technology.

Compensation & Benefits
  • Base salary range: $71,000‑$96,000 USD annually.
  • Eligibility for an annual bonus based on individual performance and company objectives.
  • Comprehensive benefits package available on the first day of employment, including 401(k), vacation, sick and safe time.
