Job Description

Western Digital, the premiere producer of hard disk drives, is seeking a data scientist with advanced Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) expertise to join a growing team of electron microscopists who support WD's research, development, and manufacturing efforts in magnetic recording. The primary purpose of our work is to support the development of the next generation of head and media technology, in addition to nanoscale Failure Analysis (FA) and process/tool qualification for wafer and magnetic media manufacturing lines. The candidate will design and integrate autonomous control algorithms and develop interactive software applications for automating high-end TEMs. The candidate will develop efficient data management and infrastructure tools to improve turnaround time. The candidate will work closely with other team members to plan experiments and develop software tools to meet advanced analysis requirements. This position is located in our world-class Analytical Sciences Laboratory in San Jose, California.

Qualifications:

Ph.D. in Materials Science, Physics, or other related engineering discipline with focus on TEM research is required. 3 or more years of experience with automation of the state-of-the-art Thermo Fisher Scientific TEMs is required. The candidate should be fluent in Python and have solid background in data science, machine learning, computer vision and statistical data analysis. Hands-on experience with FIB lamella preparation and automation is a plus. The applicant must demonstrate superior oral and written communication skills. Strong problem-solving skills and the desire to work in a team environment are essential.

Compensation & Benefits Details

  • An employee’s pay position within the salary range may be based on several factors including but not limited to (1) relevant education; qualifications; certifications; and experience; (2) skills, ability, knowledge of the job; (3) performance, contribution and results; (4) geographic location; (5) shift; (6) internal and external equity; and (7) business and organizational needs.
  • The salary range is what we believe to be the range of possible compensation for this role at the time of this posting. We may ultimately pay more or less than the posted range and this range is only applicable for jobs to be performed in California, Colorado, New York or remote jobs that can be performed in California, Colorado and New York. This range may be modified in the future.
  • You will be eligible to participate in Western Digital’s Short-Term Incentive (STI) Plan, which provides incentive awards based on Company and individual performance. Depending on your role and your performance, you may be eligible to participate in our annual Long-Term Incentive (LTI) program, which consists of restricted stock units (RSUs) or cash equivalents, pursuant to the terms of the LTI plan.
