Job summary

HDR, Inc. seeks a Transmission EIT/Designer in Raleigh to conduct analyses and develop overhead and underground transmission line designs, including PLS-CADD models, drawings, and cost estimates. You will apply NESC/ASCE/IEEE standards and provide technical guidance to designers and BIM staff.

Coordinate with civil, geotechnical and environmental teams to support planning, permitting and execution on power projects. Local candidates preferred.

Qualifications

• EIT certificate required; candidates without EIT will be placed into a Design Coordinator role and will be expected to obtain it for career progression.
• Professional Engineering license exam completed or in progress.
• Previous experience in project execution within the Power Market Sector.
• Computer skills in Microsoft Office and standard Power Market Sector design software (PLS-CADD, PLS-Pole, MFAD, LPile, AutoCAD).
• Knowledge of industry codes and standards (NESC, ASCE, IEEE).
• Internship or coursework related to power transmission systems.
• Local candidates preferred.

Responsibilities

• Conduct engineering analyses and develop overhead and underground transmission line design solutions, including preparing and reviewing project deliverables such as PLS-CADD models, engineering calculation packages, drawings, cost estimates, specifications, and construction work packages.
• Perform transmission line engineering calculations and studies applying established engineering principles and judgment (structure loading, sag/tension, clearances, line re-rates, foundations).
• Develop and validate transmission line designs in compliance with industry codes and project requirements.
• Independently execute portions of transmission line projects with moderate complexity; support senior engineers on larger projects.
• Provide technical guidance and design direction to Designers, BIM Specialists, and junior staff; review deliverables for accuracy and constructability.
• Coordinate with multidisciplinary teams (civil, structural, geotechnical, environmental, survey, PM) to support planning, permitting and execution.
• Support project engineering activities (scope, schedule, budget, proposals, client coordination).
• Participate in field investigations, constructability reviews, site visits, and construction support; evaluate field conditions and recommend engineering solutions.
• Apply engineering judgment to assess alternatives, identify risks, and improve reliability, safety and constructability.
• Perform other transmission line engineering duties as needed.
