Job summary

Pfizer is seeking a hands-on Translational AI Engineer to transform AI workflow concepts into durable systems within the Research Unit. You will build data, evaluation, and deployment layers, ensuring tools scale from alpha to beta and integrate with clinical workflows.

You will work across computational biology, immunology, and clinical teams, delivering production-quality AI systems with robust evaluation and guardrails. Hybrid on-site role in Cambridge, MA.

Qualifications

• PhD with 1+ years of experience OR Master’s degree with 5+ years of software or ML engineering experience — OR Bachelor’s degree with 6+ years of experience.
• Hands-on experience building AI/ML systems beyond prompt-wrapping with depth in at least one modality.
• Ability to evaluate, debug, and harden AI-assisted codebases quickly.
• Strong Python engineer fluent in model APIs, prompt engineering, and relevant frameworks.
• Experience with Postgres or equivalent and ETL for data platforms.
• Fluency in cloud infrastructure (AWS, GCP, or Azure) with containerization and CI/CD.
• Understanding of immunology/biology/translational research or clinical workflows.
• A track record of build-vs-buy decisions and evaluation harnesses.

Responsibilities

• Design and build fit-for-purpose AI/ML systems for recurring scientific workflows, including hybrid RAG when needed.
• Improve AI-assisted prototypes into production-ready tools with evaluation harnesses.
• Stand up lean data platform and ETL under collaboration with Digital.
• Promote internal AI tools from alpha to beta; define production readiness.
• Document SOPs to enable rigorous development from day one.
• Evaluate commercial AI/ML tools against build-vs-buy criteria, considering cost and scientific fit.
• Run evaluation loops against scientific/clinical benchmarks with domain input.
• Develop hardened primitives, reference architectures, and benchmarks for reuse.
