Job summary

The New York City Department of Transportation is seeking an Assistant Civil Engineer to join the Signals Street Lighting Engineering Design Unit, supporting bus priority projects and transit infrastructure across the city.

You will prepare CAD drawings, perform traffic studies, and coordinate with the MTA and other partners while ensuring ADA, MUTCD, and Vision Zero compliance within the NYC Streets Plan.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in civil engineering and one year of full-time civil engineering experience; or
  • Bachelor's degree and a Master's degree in civil engineering.

Responsibilities

  • Develop geometric layouts, bus lanes, curbside regulations, intersection treatments, and transit priority street configurations.
  • Conduct traffic studies, bus speed assessments, turning movement counts, and safety analyses.
  • Prepare CAD drawings, concept plans, signing/striping layouts, and technical exhibits.
  • Document existing conditions, verify measurements, assess constraints, and support feasibility evaluations.
  • Support Transit Signal Priority (TSP), queue jumps, and signal timing adjustments.
  • Collaborate with planners, operations teams, borough engineers, MTA staff, utilities, and communities.
  • Maintain GIS layers, project databases, and engineering records related to bus lanes and signals.
  • Ensure designs meet ADA, MUTCD, NYC Street Design Guidelines, and Vision Zero.
