Job summary

NYC Department of Transportation seeks a City Planner to oversee rapid bus network development with MTA alignment, advancing the NYC Streets Plan and transit policy initiatives. You will lead a sub-unit, meet with public stakeholders, and guide infrastructure-intensive projects to improve bus operations and pedestrian access across New York City.

The role requires a master’s degree or equivalent experience, strong leadership, and proven ability to manage complex projects in a fast-paced public

Qualifications

• Master’s degree in city planning or related field; or
• Bachelor’s degree plus one year of relevant full-time experience; or
• equivalent combination of education/experience with a bachelor’s degree required.
• Graduate education in city planning, urban design, transportation engineering or related fields may substitute for experience (30 graduate credits for one year).

Responsibilities

• Oversee public outreach with communities and boards.
• Pursue and manage grants through federal/state programs (e.g., FTA).
• Navigate environmental review and project development phases.
• Manage budgets and track project progress.
• Coordinate with MTA on bus service concepts and operations.
• Develop project implementation plans (in-house and/or capital).
• Hire, mentor, and develop staff; prepare executive briefing materials.
• Engage with the public in workshops and meetings, including evenings/weekends.
