Job summary

City of New York’s Transit Development unit within NYC DOT TPM seeks candidates to support bus-priority planning and policy initiatives. You will assist with planning, design, and implementation for bus priority projects, and coordinate with MTA on transit planning efforts.

Ideal candidates will have strong quantitative analysis skills, experience with CAD/Synchro/GIS, and excellent written and verbal communication, including presentations. A hybrid schedule with occasional evenings is possible.

Qualifications

  • A baccalaureate degree and two years of related experience, or
  • Six years with high school diploma in related community work, or
  • Equivalent combination with at least one year of qualifying experience.

Job description

Transit Development (TD), within NYC DOT’s Division of Transportation Planning & Management (TPM), is responsible for developing public transit-supportive street infrastructure and policies to improve mobility for all New Yorkers The unit manages the bus-related components of the NYC Streets Plan, including the Bus Action Plan and other transit policy initiatives and develops location-specific projects to help the quality and safety of bus operations, and to improve pedestrian access to transit. TD also serves as a resource to the agency on public transit-related matters, including acting as one of the key points of contact with the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA).

TPM seeks to hire 5 candidates to serve the TD unit within its Bus Priority Subunit and its Planning and Policy Subunit. Staff will be working under supervision to assist with a variety of projects that further the goals of the NYC Streets Plan and Better Buses. Tasks include planning, design, and implementation associated with in-house bus priority projects; conceptual design and design review for capital projects; planning analysis associated with improving bus stops; and coordination with internal and external stakeholders on various transit-related planning efforts. Much of TD’s work requires close coordination with MTA in its role as New York City’s primary transit service provider.

The selected candidates will also conduct outreach with the general public, work with community boards and other public stakeholders in public workshops, presentations, and other settings, including occasional evening and weekend work. The candidates will also be expected to have or develop proficiency in the use of tools for transportation planning analysis and street design, such as GIS, Traffic analysis software, and CAD. Transportation Planning and Management (TPM) is responsible for the safe, efficient, and environmentally responsible movement of people and goods on the City's streets, supporting the larger goals of economic and social vitality for people living, working, and doing business in New York City. The Division’s responsibilities include planning, street design, technical analysis, signs, transit development, freight mobility, and markings, ensuring the safety of motor vehicle occupants, pedestrians, and cyclists.

Preferred Skills

The ideal candidates should demonstrate the ability to perform quantitative analysis, preferably with public transit data and/or design aptitude, strong written and verbal skills, including delivering presentations, and should exhibit a capacity for problem-solving. Experience with CAD, Synchro, and/or GIS is desirable.

Additional Information

This position may be eligible for remote work up to 2 days per week, pursuant to the Remote Work Pilot Program agreed to between the City and DC37.

Minimum Qualifications
  • A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college and two years of experience in community work or community centered activities in an area related to the duties described above; or
  • High school graduation or equivalent and six years of experience in community work or community centered activities in an area related to the duties as described above; or
  • Education and/or experience which is equivalent to "1" or "2" above. However, all candidates must have at least one year of experience as described in "1" above.

Residency Requirement

New York City residency is generally required within 90 days of appointment.
