Job summary

Manatee County Government in Sarasota, FL seeks a Transit Operator to transport citizens on assigned routes and maintain safety and courteous service. You will operate a county bus or van, follow schedules, provide route and fare information, assist passengers including wheelchair users, and report daily trip data.

Required are a High School diploma and a Class B CDL with passenger and air brake endorsements, plus the ability to pass a DOT physical and background check.

Qualifications

• High School diploma or equivalent required.
• Five years driving experience or two years commercial driving experience.
• Class B CDL with passenger and air brakes endorsements prior to receiving a Conditional Offer of Employment.
• Must be able to pass the CDL skills test within six weeks with training provided.
• Must successfully pass all tests and written examinations given.
• Must successfully pass a DOT physical and pass a Level 2 background check.
• Must be at least 21 years old.

Responsibilities

• Operate a county passenger bus or van on an assigned route according to a time schedule, while safely complying with traffic regulations.
• Provide information to passengers including connecting schedules, routes and transfer points; assist passengers in getting to destinations and securing wheelchairs as needed.
• Record operating data daily such as mileage, hours, fare box readings and passenger counts; prepare reports as required.
• Enforce rules of conduct and operation to ensure passenger safety; inspect vehicle for safety and report any issues.
• Communicate delays or accidents to dispatcher; maintain effective relationships with coworkers and the public.
