Job summary

The School Board of Highlands County is accepting applications for the Bus Operator (Transportation) position. The role covers daily school bus operations, safety compliance, route adherence, and student supervision as part of the Transportation Department.

Responsibilities include following routes, inspecting buses, maintaining discipline, and reporting to the Transportation Office. Requires a Florida CDL Class B with school bus endorsement and completion of operator training.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED; supplemented by 5–11 months experience or training involving driving a passenger vehicle, or GED within two years of employment.
• Hold a valid Florida Commercial Driver's License, Class B (or higher), with school bus and passenger endorsement.
• Successful completion of approved training course for school bus operators.

Responsibilities

• Obeys all traffic laws
• Observes all mandatory safety regulations for school buses
• Maintains student discipline and reports student misconduct to principal or supervisor
• Informs Transportation Department of suggested route or bus load changes
• Assists other school bus operators on routes in case of emergency
• Follows printed route unless permission to follow an alternate route is given by Transportation Office
• Keeps to assigned time schedule when traffic and weather permit
• Transports only authorized persons as identified by procedure
• Completes and submits required reports to Transportation Office
• Operates any school bus assigned to the Transportation fleet
• Performs pre-trip inspection of bus
• Conducts interior inspection after each run to ensure no students are left aboard
• Notifies authorities of mechanical failure using required forms
• Maintains a clean and orderly bus
• Reports accidents or incidents to Transportation Office within timelines
• Attends required in-service training
• Maintains goodwill with staff, parents, and public
• Wears prescribed uniform while operating the bus or on duty
• Compliance with Florida State School Board regulations and Transportation Department procedures
• Exercises leadership on school trips
