Job summary

The City of High Point is seeking a Transit Operator I to drive bus routes, provide exceptional service to passengers, and ensure reliable transit operations. The successful candidate will operate buses on established routes, conduct safety inspections, and assist passengers while maintaining accurate trip records.

Qualifications include a valid North Carolina driver's license with the necessary endorsements, alongside strong communication skills in English.

Qualifications

Job Title

Transit Operator I

What You’ll Do

Drive bus routes, serve passengers, and maintain reliable transit services for the City of High Point.

Essential Tasks & Responsibilities
  • Operate the bus on assigned routes and schedules, ensuring safe and timely transportation.
  • Perform pre‑departure inspections of the bus and related equipment; report any defects.
  • Maintain trip records including fare collections, mileage, and vehicle conditions.
  • Assist passengers in boarding and alighting, including securing wheelchairs with tie‑down straps.
  • Collect fares and issue tickets, including handling transfer slips.
  • Announce bus stops clearly to keep passengers informed of their next destination.
  • Provide basic schedule information and answer questions about routes and arrival times.
  • Use the two‑way radio to report traffic delays, accidents, downed traffic signs, and faulty signals.
  • Perform post‑shift inspections and document any incidents or accidents.
  • Adhere to safety regulations, OSHA standards, and prescribed accident procedures.
  • Complete additional duties as assigned to support smooth transit operations.
Minimum Required Qualifications
  • At least 21 years old.
  • Valid Class B North Carolina Commercial Driver’s License with Passenger (P) Endorsement.
  • Six (6) months of verifiable experience operating a similar or larger commercial vehicle.
  • Ability to drive a transit bus in typical urban traffic and work well under time constraints and stress.
  • Flexibility to work various schedules, including fill‑ins, split shifts, nights, weekends, and holidays.
  • Proficiency in speaking, reading, and writing in English.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Twelve (12) months of verifiable experience operating a similar or larger commercial vehicle.
  • Bilingual skills (French or Spanish).
Physical & Mental Requirements

Required hearing and speaking; visual acuity of 20/25 (far) and 20/30 (near); depth perception; broad field of vision. Physical strength for light to medium work, including handling up to 30 pounds occasionally. Mental abilities include reasoning, mathematics for making change, reading manuals, and speaking via PA system and radio.
