Job summary

North Central Regional Transit District is seeking a Transit Operations Supervisor to oversee staff performing fixed route, express, commuter, and microtransit operations. The role ensures safe, on-time service, supervises dispatch and customer service, and coordinates detours and incident response.

Responsibilities include evaluating performance, coaching staff, maintaining shift coverage, monitoring AVL and radios, and preparing reports while enforcing safety and district policies.

Job description

Under general direction, plans, schedules, assigns, reviews, and supervises the work of staff performing transit operations and operational support functions within the North Central Regional Transit District. Ensures safe, efficient, and on-time delivery of assigned transit services across fixed route, express, commuter, and microtransit operations; oversees dispatch and customer service staff; monitors road vehicle operations and vehicle inspections; ensures adherence to District policies and procedures; and performs related work as required.

  • Plans, organizes, assigns, supervises, and reviews the work of transit operators, dispatch staff, and customer service staff; trains staff in work procedures; evaluates employee performance; counsels employees and provides coaching and feedback; effectively recommends initial disciplinary action; and assists in selection and promotion processes.
  • Implements established District policies, procedures, and standard operating practices within daily operations.
  • Serves as the primary on-duty supervisory authority during the assigned shift, including decision-making related to detours, service adjustments, incident response, and operator support within established District policies and procedures.
  • Monitors schedule adherence during the assigned shift and recommends operational adjustments to maintain coverage and service reliability.
  • Performs shift-level supervisory duties including customer experience monitoring, on-time performance, ride checks, route evaluations, detour coordination, bus stop and passenger shelter inspections, accident and incident response and documentation, and operator coaching and guidance.
  • Conducts on-scene response and preliminary investigation of accidents and incidents and ensures proper documentation and timely escalation to the Transit Operations Manager.
  • Monitors services in progress via Automated Vehicle Location (AVL), Mobile Data Terminals, and two-way radio systems; evaluates operational performance to ensure quality and customer satisfaction; troubleshoots and manages emergency situations.
  • Oversees dispatch and customer service functions; monitors staffing availability and assigns operators to vehicles in District systems.
  • Actively champions a culture of safety across the supervisory team; models safe behaviors, addresses unsafe practices and conditions in the moment, reinforces safety ownership at all staff levels, and ensures safety considerations are consistently integrated into shift-level decision-making.
  • Holds staff accountable for performance, attendance, and conduct standards during the assigned shift; addresses deficiencies directly and documents actions in accordance with District policy.
  • Identifies service delivery gaps, recurring operational issues, and opportunities for improvement; documents patterns, analyzes contributing factors, and surfaces actionable recommendations to the Transit Operations Manager in support of continuous operational improvement and excellence.
  • Answers questions and provides information to the public; investigates and responds to complaints and inquiries from customers, staff, and outside organizations; recommends corrective actions to resolve issues.
  • Assists and oversees staff with special re-routing due to road closures caused by weather, street construction, traffic accidents, or other events impacting route operations.
  • Ensures consistent application of attendance, safety, and performance standards during the assigned shift.
  • Reports discrepancies and unsafe conditions to appropriate personnel; recommends and implements corrective actions.
  • Prepares and submits bi-weekly payroll timesheets and related documents.
  • Maintains accurate operational documentation including performance records, incident reports, payroll documentation, shift logs, and staff files documenting performance appraisals, training, commendations, and disciplinary actions.
  • Prepares a variety of written reports, memoranda, and correspondence related to transit operations and staff performance.
  • May serve as dispatcher or operator in emergency or critical staffing situations.
  • Ensures staff observe and comply with all District and mandated safety rules, regulations, and protocols, as well as applicable federal, state, and local laws and District policies, procedures, and labor agreements.
  • Opens and closes facility to allow employee access.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Education and Experience

Any combination of training and experience that would provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required qualifications would be:

Education
  • Transit Operations Supervisor I/II: Equivalent to completion of the twelfth (12th) grade.
Experience
  • Transit Operations Supervisor I: Four (4) years of progressively responsible experience in people management skills and customer service work experience, two (2) years of which must have been in a position that involved the direct supervision of others.
