Job summary

City of Gardena seeks a skilled Fleet Mechanic to inspect, diagnose, service and repair buses, trucks and motorized equipment within the Transportation Department. You will perform preventative maintenance, tune-ups, brake and suspension work, and use diagnostic software and tools.

Field service and driving between bays may be required. A high school diploma or GED is required; automotive technology training is preferred and ASE certification in H/T/A is desirable.

Description

Under general direction, tunes up, inspects, diagnoses, services, and makes repairs to automobiles, trucks, passenger buses, and other power-driven, and mechanical equipment and propulsion systems. This position will be located within the Transportation Department.

Supervision Received and Exercised

Positions in this Class will be assigned to the Transportation Department garage and report directly to the Transit Maintenance Manager or designee.

Representative Duties

• Performs all preventative maintenance inspections, repairs and light diagnostics on motorized and mechanical equipment and vehicles; diagnoses and determines the extent of necessary repairs; performs work on different vehicle subsystems; inspects and repairs various propulsion systems; performs tune‑ups; replaces spark plugs; test and replace starters; recharge batteries; repairs and replaces such other components as generators, relays, lights and switches; and related components;
• With prior approval, removes and replaces, relines, and adjusts brakes; performs repairs on suspension;
• Drives vehicle to and from service bays; responds to road calls; perform bus exchanges; may be required to perform work in the field;
• Steam cleans parts and equipment; maintains shop and cleans up after working on assignments; mop, sweep, pick up debris, pressure wash and scrub floors with the use of a pressure washer and floor scrubber; services and fuels buses;
• Replaces a variety of interior and exterior body parts such as bumpers, body panels, glass, doors, fare boxes, bicycle racks, seats, and destination sign systems;
• Attends various technical training courses;
• Maintains paper and electronic records of preventative maintenance, time, materials, parts, and work performed;
• Works will all tools of the trade, including bus computer based diagnostic software programs;
• Inspects and maintains air systems and airbrake components;
• Assists other mechanics as needed;
• Ability to learn new technologies;
• Performs other related duties as assigned.

Education and Experience

High school diploma or GED. Preferred: Graduate in Automotive Technology from a recognized Community College or Technical School. Preferred: Two years of recent paid work experience performing mechanic work at repair facility. Preferred: Automotive Service Excellence Certificate for H, T, and/or A series.

Knowledge and Abilities

Basic knowledge and the ability to correctly use tools, equipment and procedures used in the repair and adjustment of motor equipment; of mechanical, fuel, ignition, electrical and cooling systems and their repair and adjustment; of the operation and care of internal combustion engines, equipment chassis and parts. Must have the ability to follow detailed instruction and directions to make mechanical repairs to a variety of automotive and trucks, transit buses, and equipment.

Physical Demands and Working Conditions

Work is performed indoors and occasionally outdoors and involves excessive noise, extreme temperatures, humidity or wetness, dust, gas, fumes, odors or chemicals, dust or wind, vibration, toxic substances, radiation, explosive or electrical and mechanical hazards. Work involves physical demands such as sitting, walking, standing, bending (neck & from waist), reaching (up and down), stooping, kneeling, crawling, twisting (neck and waist); use of hands in simple and power grasp, fine manipulation; driving/steering, pushing/pulling; required to lift and carry up to 75 pounds. Working at heights requiring the use of fall arrest equipment; walking and working on uneven surfaces; working while wearing various types of personal protective equipment including but not limited to; safety glasses or face shields, electric shock prevention gloves and boots, face masks and/or respirators, reflective work clothing or other protective equipment as may be required by the City of Gardena Transportation Department or other Regulatory Agencies. Ability to work flexible hours including evenings and weekends as assigned.

License

Must possess a valid Class B Instruction permit with “P” (passenger) endorsement and no airbrake restrictions on the first day of scheduled work. Must attain a Class B Driver’s License with passenger and airbrake endorsements within 6 months of hiring.
