The City of Montebello is seeking an Equipment Mechanic to perform advanced maintenance and repair on buses, trucks, and other heavy equipment. You will diagnose complex issues, overhaul engines, and conduct preventive maintenance to ensure reliability.

SALARY:
Effective July 2026, $6,081.94 - $7,595.50 Monthly
Effective July 2027, $6,233.99 - $7,785.40 Monthly
Under general supervision, to perform a variety of difficult inspection, diagnosis, maintenance and repair of bus, automotive, public works, and emergency equipment; and to perform related work as required.
This is the full working level in the Equipment Mechanic class series. Incumbents' job assignments are concentrated in the performance of the most difficult and complex duties involving buses and heavy equipment. In addition, incumbents are required to be fully proficient in the performance of all types of equipment maintenance work.
Inspects, locates, and diagnoses mechanical defects on City buses and automobiles, trucks, emergency equipment, construction equipment, and other power-driven equipment; determines the extent of necessary repairs; overhauls, repairs, and adjusts engines, transmissions, differentials, and clutches; tunesup engines, replacing ignition parts and cleaning and adjusting carburetors and fuel injection systems; replaces or repairs faulty parts, including wheel bearings, oil seals, shock absorbers, exhaust systems, steering mechanisms, and other parts and equipment; repairs and replaces components including generators, distributors, relays, lights, and switches; performs front-end alignments and repairs; repairs and adjusts gasoline generators, water pumps, and air compressors; performs welding work to adapt and fabricate parts and equipment; interchanges gas and diesel engines; performs specialized maintenance and repairs on diesel equipment and hydraulic systems; carries out preventive maintenance programs; makes field and emergency repairs as necessary; maintains records on time and materials used; road tests repaired equipment; installs emergency warning equipment.
Possession of an appropriate California driver's license. Candidates must obtain their California Class B permit within two weeks of employment and their California Class B license within 90 days of employment.
Must be able to work nights, weekends, and holidays
Work environment will be a combination of both indoors and outdoors.
Possession of a personal toolbox and a basic hand tool set.

Work Background: Two years of progressively responsible and varied journey-level work experience performing skilled maintenance and repair work on buses, automotive, and other power-driven equipment, including extensive experience on diesel engines and hydraulic systems.
