An established industry player is seeking a dedicated Metro Transit Mechanic to join their team in Madison. Mechanical aptitude is required, but extensive training to work on transit vehicles is provided. We also train you to get your CDL permit and license.
This role involves servicing and performing routine, repetitive, and minor preventive maintenance and repair work on diesel, hybrid, and electric motor coaches. Employees initially work under close supervision of a maintenance supervisor in a training capacity for up to six months while increasing their mechanical skills and familiarity with Metro Transit equipment and procedures.
Upon hire, employees are paid a minimum of $59,491.12 annually (in CG41, Range 06, Step 4*).
Candidates with sufficient verifiable full-time employment or trade school experience in automotive or heavy vehicle maintenance may start at a higher pay rate, determined at hire.
Overtime hours may be available for pay or compensatory time. All training is paid.
All Metro Transit mechanics are hired at the C level but can advance to higher levels B ($69,495.14 annually at step 5) and A ($72,273.76 annually at step 5) over time as vacancies occur.

The remainder of training will be on various shifts until completed, including weekends. The training period lasts at least six months. After training, new mechanics will select shifts based on seniority and must be available for any shift, with newer employees selecting last.

Six months of technical experience in auto, diesel, construction, agriculture, or related heavy equipment fields, or six months of education in auto or diesel mechanics can substitute for experience.
Candidates must pass the Class B CDL, passenger, and air brake endorsements during training, with a valid Wisconsin Driver's License required to take the CDL test. Endorsements and licenses must be maintained.
Physical requirements include the ability to lift up to 75 pounds occasionally, carry weights, climb ladders, sustain arm and body positions, manipulate tools, and perform other physical tasks. The position complies with federal standards for individuals with disabilities, requiring passing a physical exam.
