Job summary

The City of Lynchburg, home to the Central Virginia Criminal Justice Academy, seeks a Training Coordinator to support the Academy Director and Assistant Director. You will research policy needs, apply established procedures, and coordinate duties for basic and in-service training.

Responsibilities include developing curricula, scheduling classes, supervising students, maintaining records, ensuring DCJS compliance, and serving as liaison with agencies.

Qualifications

• Substantial work experience in a criminal justice related field is required.
• An undergraduate degree, supervision experience and DCJS general instructor certification and specialty DCJS certifications (firearms, defensive tactics, RADAR/LIDAR, SFST/DUI, active shooter, etc.) are highly desired.
• Possession of valid Driver's License issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia and acceptable driving record according to City policy required.
• Applicant must pass a background check.
• Must have good communication skills, both oral and written. A thorough knowledge of the use of English language and form is essential. Sound working knowledge of computer systems and operation is needed. Must have the ability to exercise independent judgement with good administrative, management and interpersonal skills.

Responsibilities

• Plan, develop and update training curriculum for basic and in-service training and keep the Assistant Director and Director informed of recommended revision, if any.
• Develop schedules for basic and in-service classes.
• Instruct basic and in-service personnel in mandated curriculum.
• Maintain training documentation and records per DCJS requirements.
• Supervise and coordinate out-of-town trainings and basic level training.
• Maintain equipment and ensure proper operation; order and stock training items.
• Maintain student Chromebook supplies and update Google Drive.
• Keep Academy management informed of pertinent business matters.
• Attend graduations and proctor quizzes, and participate in outside development training as directed.
• Achieve specialty instructor status such as firearms, defensive tactics or defensive driving.
• Review material to be retested with basic classes after each exam.
• Ensure all instructors are certified to instruct according to the Virginia DCJS prior to teaching.
