Job summary

NYC Health + Hospitals in New York, NY seeks a Training and Staff Development Specialist to assist in planning, development, and implementation of training programs aimed at enhancing technical, professional, and management skills across the organization.

Under supervision, you will work with department leaders to identify training needs, develop curricula, conduct sessions, and evaluate effectiveness, supporting a culture of continuous learning and workforce excellence.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Education, Psychology, Personnel Administration, Business Administration, Management or related field.
  • One year of experience in employee development and training programs in a health care facility, business, educational, governmental organization or related fields.
  • Knowledge of training principles and psychology of learning; ability to instruct and motivate.
  • Ability to communicate orally and relate to others; strong writing and research skills.
  • Proficient writing and research skills; or a satisfactory combination of education, training and experience.
  • 5 years' experience in a simulation, research, education and/or grant writing environment preferred
  • Knowledge of computer hardware and software relevant to simulator functions.

Responsibilities

  • Confers with management to gain knowledge of identified work situations requiring training and development.
  • Reviews training needs to develop instructional materials for on-the-job training and other needs.
  • Works with Department Heads in preparation of training curricula; identifies purpose and objectives.
  • Formulates teaching outlines and selects materials and instructional procedures.
  • Conducts general or specialized training sessions covering new employees’ orientation, on-the-job training, leadership and management development.
  • Maintains liaison relationships and discusses training content with operational personnel.
  • Reviews and recommends methods to improve acquired skills and techniques.

Duties & Responsibilities
Purpose of Position

Under supervision, with latitude for independent initiative and judgment, assists in the planning, development, and implementation of training and staff development programs to enhance technical, professional, and management skills and knowledge in order to attain the optimization of human resource management and utilization.

Examples Of Typical Tasks
  • Confers with management to gain knowledge of identified work situations requiring training and development.
  • Reviews training needs in order to develop instructional materials for on-the-job training and other instructional needs that may be pertinent.
  • Works with Department Heads in preparation of training curricula. Identifies purpose and objectives, selects materials and instructional procedures.
  • Formulates teaching outlines in conformance with selected instructional methods utilizing knowledge of specified training and development needs and effectiveness of such training methods as individual coaching, group instruction, lectures, demonstrations, conferences, meetings and workshops.
  • Conducts general or specialized training sessions covering such areas concerned with new employees’ orientation, specific on-the-job training, promotional development, upgrading, retraining, leadership, management development and other such adaptations to changes in policies, procedures, regulations and new technologies.
  • Maintains liaison relationships and discusses training content and techniques with various levels of operational personnel.
  • Reviews and recommends methods to improve acquired skills and techniques.
Minimum Qualifications
  • A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university in Education, Psychology, Personnel Administration, Business Administration, Management or related discipline; and
  • One year of experience in employee development and training programs in a health care facility, business, educational, governmental organization or other fields related to training, development and analysis, or training in implementation of operational or management systems; and
  • Knowledge of the principles of training, psychology of learning, applications and the ability to instruct and motivate; and
  • Ability to communicate orally and relate to others; and
  • Proficient writing and research skills; or
  • A satisfactory combination of education, training and experience indicating the ability to perform satisfactorily.
Department Preferences
  • 5 years' experience in a simulation, research, education and/ or grant writing environment preferred
  • Knowledgeable regarding the use, and skilled in he operation, of simulator technologies - anatomic models, task trainers, screen-based simulations, full body mannequins, virtual reality /hybrid simulators.
  • Knowledge of computer hardware and software relevant to simulator functions
  • Knowledge of and experience using audio-video equipment and software for recording, duplication, mixing and editing, transfer and storage
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and web-based applications
  • Strong written and oral communication skills including the ability to communicate technical information clearly and simply to non-technical persons
  • Ability to master new equipment and software rapidly and independently
  • Ability to diagnose and fix equipment failures
  • Ability to work well under pressure
  • Ability to work well with people from different disciplines and having different levels of training
  • Ability to work well independently and as a team member
  • Flexible and adaptable and able to work evenings and weekends when necessary
  • Ability to meet physical demands of the work, which requires occasional lifting of heavy equipment and management/utilization of advanced medical devices
  • Resourcefulness and excellent problem-solving ability
  • Reliable with excellent attendance record
  • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written
  • Demonstrated ability to conduct expert educational experiences
  • Demonstrated ability to create and maintain positive internal and external relationships Working toward publication in educational research, preferably in the field of simulation
  • Experience with competency evaluation assessment, design checklists and/or global assessment tools
  • Knowledge of computer hardware and software applications relevant to simulator functions.
  • Computer literacy in PC-based software applications including Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Access.
