Job summary

Illinois Department of Agriculture invites applicants for a regional Products & Standards Inspector Trainee role, based in McHenry County with daily operations centered from home base. You will undergo six to twelve months of agency-approved training in inspection and investigation of products by weight, measure or count, and support field duties under seasoned inspectors.

The position emphasizes travel for on-the-job training, record-keeping, and participation in meetings to learn procedures

Qualifications

• Requires knowledge, skill, and mental development equivalent to the completion of two years of college, preferably with coursework in fields relating to business, management, or communications.

Responsibilities

• Under direct supervision, participates in an agency approved training program of six to twelve months duration in the inspection and investigation of products sold on the basis of weight, measure or count; receives training in inspection techniques, testing weighting and measuring devices, inspecting prepackaged commodities and inspecting scanning devices; receives training and performs controlled assignments under close supervision of the line supervisor or experienced inspector.
• Serves as an apprentice in the field under the guidance of experienced Products and Standards Inspectors.
• Travels to participate in on-the-job training and orientation using test standards and associated equipment for inspection techniques.
• Travels to participate in on-the-job training and orientation on maintaining records such as accounts of daily activities.
• Travels to attend meetings and workshops to obtain knowledge of proper inspection procedures and administrative policies.
