Job summary

Ohio Department of Agriculture is seeking a Meat Inspector Trainee to join our team in various Ohio counties. You will learn to conduct inspections, enforce sanitation and safety policies, and work under guidance from senior inspectors in a state agency dedicated to protecting meat and poultry products.

Trainees receive hands-on mentoring, participate in ante mortem and postmortem inspections, and contribute to labeling and product compliance efforts within a supportive, public-sector

Qualifications

  • No ag background required; training provided by mentors.
  • Training and mentoring by higher level meat inspector.
  • Learn to inspect registered meat plants, slaughtering plants and processing facilities.
  • Perform ante mortem and postmortem inspections per sanitation and safety guidelines.
  • Learn labeling requirements and review labeling materials.

Responsibilities

  • Learn procedures and assist in conducting inspections of meat plants and facilities.
  • Conduct visual examination of live animals prior to slaughter for abnormalities.
  • Record results and coordinate with veterinarian for final disposition of unhealthy animals.
  • Inspect equipment, facilities and personnel for sanitation and safety compliance.
  • Assist in documenting verification results in PHIS system.
  • Prepare records and reports related to product condemnations and retentions.
  • Attend training courses and refresher seminars.
