Job summary

The Commonwealth of Virginia's Department of Transportation is seeking a Traffic Engineer to perform complex traffic engineering studies, including signal studies, speed analyses, and safety assessments. You may oversee consultant staff and prepare analyses, reports and recommendations for transportation projects.

You will communicate with VDOT staff, local government partners, consultants and the public, manage multiple assignments, and apply engineering principles to improve traffic

Qualifications

• Considerable experience gathering data, developing recommendations and making presentations.
• Experience collecting and analyzing traffic related data.
• Experience designing plans for traffic control devices, incorporating traffic engineering requirements into roadway plans and making recommendations for plan changes.
• Experience in conducting traffic engineering studies involving traffic operations, traffic control devices, and roadway and pedestrian safety and capacity issues.
• Extensive knowledge of traffic engineering principles, practices and standards.
• Skilled in the use of computers and software applications to include traffic engineering and design software such as CADD, MicroStation, Highway Capacity Software, Synchro, CORSIM, SYDRA, etc.

Responsibilities

• Analyze data and prepare clear reports and recommendations.
• Establish communication between VDOT, contractors, government agencies and the public; investigate issues and resolve complaints.
• Conduct complex traffic engineering studies including signal studies, speed studies, and safety analyses.
• Use VDOT processes to deliver projects on time and within scope.
• Manage activities and projects, including scope, schedule, budget and status reports.
• Support project engineering and special initiatives as assigned, representing VDOT on committees and work groups.
• Identify opportunities to improve transportation system operations and safety; coordinate project identification efforts.
• Demonstrate teamwork and customer service aligned with VDOT values.
