Description

Position Summary

MassDOT is looking for a technologically savvy candidate who enjoys field workasa Traffic Data Collection Technician. This positionmayrequire travelstatewide as necessaryto maintain, install, and retrieve data from trafficdatacollection devices. An ideal candidate would have an interest inall aspects oftraffic data collectiontechnologies, be able to work with and diagnose issues with solar panels, traffic collection devices, and other traffic counting equipment as necessary.

Option to be based in any of these Depot locations: Concord, Walpole, Palmer, Weston.

Duties and Responsibilities

Install sensitive traffic data collection equipment, including programming, site layout, installation of all components, and safely securing the equipment to prevent theft.

Install wiring and reconfigure solar panels on permanent traffic data collection systems.

Install SDR equipment during winter months to capture critical ramp traffic data.

Maintain and service key components of traffic data equipment used for accurate traffic studies during special projects.

Assist in the operation and maintenance of the traffic data collection program, including diagnostic testing, calibration, and troubleshooting of both permanent and temporary traffic count station equipment and systems.

Assist supervisors and external contractors in upgrading traffic data collection stations to telemetry capability for remote data retrieval.

Draft proposed traffic study locations and recommend appropriate equipment for each site, considering geographical and environmental obstacles.

Maintaining detailed traffic data records and submitting accurate daily field reports in a timely manner.

Utilize Road Reporter software to upload raw traffic data for processing.

Navigate the MS2 database:

Locate station coordinates using longitude and latitude.

Identify the operational status of stations (fully operational, semi operational, or down).

Utilize TrafInfo to submit and interpret data relevant to permanent traffic monitoring stations.

Work as a team for special traffic data collection projects, performing volume, speed, and classification studies.

Assist other MassDOT departments by providing specification recommendations for installation of traffic data collection stations.

Make field changes to ensure project completion while maintaining compliance with MassDOT safety standards and traffic data collection protocols.

Coordinate and conduct training for traffic data collection staff and external partners on the use of specialized software and field equipment, ensuring adherence to proper methodologies and compliance with MassDOT standards and regulations.

Preferred Qualifications

Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of OSHA rules and regulations, as well as best workplace practices.

Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.

Minimum Entrance Requirements

This requisition will remain open until filled; however, first consideration will be given to those applicants that apply within the first 14 days.

Applicants must have at least (A) one year of full-time, or equivalent part-time, experience in civil, electrical, sanitary, or environmental engineering work in such areas as construction, surveying, design, transportation, hydraulics, structural analysis, mining, airport construction, materials analysis, soils, drafting, highway design, architecture, traffic maintenance, or planning, or (B) any equivalent combination of the required experience and the substitutions below.

Substitutions

I. An Associate’s or higher degree with a major in land surveying, civil engineering, civil engineering technology or architectural technology may be substituted for the required experience.

II. Possession of a valid certificate issued by a recognized technical institute indicating proficiency in civil engineering technology may be substituted for the required experience.

*Education toward such a degree will be prorated on the basis of the proportion of the requirements actually completed.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Based on assignment, possession of a current and valid Massachusetts Class 3 Motor Vehicle Operator’s license.
