Job summary

Orlando is seeking a Traffic Control Safety Lead to oversee street and lane closures and coordinate temporary traffic control during special events. The role requires independent judgment, directs event staff, and acts as the main contact during operations.

Shifts are evenings, weekends, and holidays, typically from 2:00 p.m. to late night. Requires MOT/TTC certification within 3 months and a valid Florida driver license. This is a part-time/seasonal contract with no guaranteed hours.

Qualifications

• Must be 18 years of age or older.
• Must be able to walk and stand for extended periods, often under hot and humid conditions and in inclement weather.
• Must be willing to work nights, weekends and overtime on short notice.
• Must be safety conscious as work is performed in the streets.
• Requires ability to work in a fast-paced environment for one hour or more without breaks.
• Must have steel toe shoes/boots.
• Must be able to lift and carry 40 pounds.
• Florida Intermediate Maintenance of Traffic (MOT) or Temporary Traffic Control (TTC) certification required within 3 months of hire.
• Valid Florida driver license required.

Responsibilities

• Lead the setup, monitoring, and removal of temporary traffic control devices in accordance with established traffic control plans.
• Assign and direct event traffic staff to designated locations; ensure proper placement and maintenance of traffic control devices throughout the event.
• Serve as the primary communication point between traffic staff, law enforcement, and Special Events & Traffic Safety Division supervisors during event operations.
• Monitor traffic conditions and staff performance, escalating issues and recommending adjustments as needed.
• Provide training, guidance, and support to new or less experienced traffic staff.
• Ensure compliance with all safety standards and city requirements while maintaining a courteous and professional demeanor.
• Document operational activities, incidents, or staffing issues for review by Special Events & Traffic Safety Division supervisors.
• Develop and implement MOT plans in response to incidents.
• Verify MOT devices and signage are removed and traffic signals are normal before off duty.
• Coordinate with City staff or MOT contractors to ensure plan adherence.
• Activate/deactivate EMC operations per procedures and event requirements.
• Monitor real-time traffic with camera systems to identify issues and support flow.
• Maintain communication with TMC, OPD, and field personnel via radios.
• Participate in pre-event planning meetings to review plans and coordination strategies.
• Ensure activities align with approved traffic and event management plans.
• Document all event-related activities and communications in the event log.
• Other duties as assigned.

Work locations include assigned areas citywide, with most operations occurring around major special event facilities in downtown Orlando. Work schedules vary depending on event calendars, staffing needs, and department priorities. Work shifts primarily occur during evenings, weekends, and holidays.
