Qualifications

  • Ability to read blueprints and interpret mechanical drawings.
  • Knowledge of HVAC vocabulary and building automation programs.
  • Ability to perform manual labor and operate HVAC equipment.

Responsibilities

  • Maintains and repairs general HVAC components.
  • Troubleshoot residential HVAC units (voltage, fuses, belts, coils).
  • Repair/replace components (motors, compressors, capacitors, pumps, belts).
  • Calibrates pneumatic thermostats.
  • Performs preventive maintenance and navigates Building Automation systems.
  • Processes daily work orders and escorts contractors at Forsyth County facilities.
  • Assists in special projects (pumps, compressor changes, after-hours maintenance).
  • Supports Skilled Trades Specialists.

Job description

The Trades Specialist position is an intermediate level technician position and is essential to the daily operations of the Facilities Operations Division. The employee in this position provides maintenance for the heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems. Work is performed for over 50 County properties to include the Law Enforcement Detention Center and various Forsyth County Parks equipment. The work involves preventative maintenance and repairs to the HVAC equipment. Specific examples of work include: Changing air filters, adjusting, replacing belts and lubricating equipment, troubleshooting, charging HVAC equipment, soldering and brazing, use of a multi-meter, calibrating and changing t-stat, rebuilding pumps and navigating building automation programs.

Work Schedule

Monday through Friday, 8:00 A.M. - 5:00 P.M.

A successful candidate should have the following knowledge, skills and abilities:

  • Ability to do a variety of skilled maintenance work.
  • Considerable knowledge of the materials, tools and methods used in a building trade such as HVAC maintenance.
  • Working knowledge of one or more additional trades.
  • Ability to work from plans and specifications.
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to maintain effective working relationships with other employees.
  • Knowledgeable of HVAC vocabulary, the ability to read and interpret mechanical and structural blueprints, and plan HVAC repairs and modifications.
  • Ability to read blueprints and sketches related to construction projects in order to assist in the preparation of materials estimates.
  • Must have ability to perform simple to complex movements requiring moderate coordination.
  • Must have visual perception and ability to discriminate colors.
  • Must be able to perceive and discriminate odors/sounds.
  • Must be able to perform manual labor for extended periods of time as required by work assignments.
  • Graduation from high school or GED and at least three years of experience in HVAC maintenance.
  • A valid N.C. driver's license is required.
  • Must have demonstrated ability to perform semi-skilled to skilled maintenance work in one or more trades or maintenance work including operation of various equipment and/or tools.
  • A higher education level may be considered as a substitution for all or part of the experience requirement.

This position is subject to working in high security areas governed by the US Department of Justice's Criminal Justice Information Services (CJIS) Security Policy and therefore requires successfully passing a more stringent criminal background check

The essential duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Maintains and repairs general HVAC components.
  • Completes routine troubleshooting on residential HVAC units to include checking for proper supply voltage, checking fuses, belts, dirty coils, rotation of equipment.
  • Completes repairs/replacements to residential HVAC components to include fan motors, compressors, capacitors, pump couplings, and belts.
  • Adjusts and calibrates pneumatic thermostats.
  • Performs routine preventative maintenance of HVAC system components.
  • Navigates various Building Automation systems.
  • Completes daily work orders which include but are not limited to performing preventive maintenance and corrective work on HVAC systems, as well as escorting outside contractors doing work at Forsyth County facilities.
  • Participates or assist in special projects, such as rebuilding pumps or changing compressor as well as after-hours preventive maintenance projects.
  • Assists Skilled Trades Specialists in completing tasks and responsibilities.
  • P erforms related work as required.
