Job summary

Goochland-County is seeking an HVAC Senior Facilities Technician to maintain, repair, and install HVAC systems across county-owned buildings. You will supervise Facilities Technicians when the Assistant Director is unavailable and collaborate with county departments to ensure comfortable, safe operations.

The role requires experience in commercial HVAC and a commitment to safety, with possible on-call duties and energy-efficiency initiatives.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED required.
• HVAC trade certification preferred (EPA 608).
• Technical/Vocational HVAC training highly desirable.

Responsibilities

• Perform routine inspection, preventive maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair on HVAC equipment in county buildings.
• Monitor system performance and ensure compliance with codes and safety policies.
• Coordinate with contractors for complex repairs or replacements.
• Maintain accurate logs and asset records; manage work orders.
• Assist planning and implementation of HVAC upgrades and energy-efficiency projects.
• Respond to service requests in a timely and professional manner.
• Supervise Facilities Technicians in the absence of the Assistant Director.
• Participate in on-call rotations and after-hours maintenance.
• Ensure proper handling of refrigerants and PPE usage.

Job description

The HVAC Senior Facilities Technician supports county operations by performing skilled maintenance, repair, and installation of heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems across county-owned buildings and facilities. This role ensures safe, efficient, and reliable building operations to serve employees and the public as well as serving as the supervisor of the Facilities Technicians in the absence of the General Services Assistant Director.

• Performs routine inspection, preventive maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair on HVAC equipment, including air handlers, chillers, boilers, heat pumps, exhaust systems, and building automation controls.

• Diagnoses mechanical, electrical, and system failures; complete repairs or coordinate with contractors as needed.

• Monitors HVAC performance to ensure compliance with county standards, building codes, and safety regulations.

• Maintains accurate records of equipment performance, repair logs, inventory, and work orders.

• Assists with planning and implementing HVAC system upgrades, replacements, and energy-efficiency initiatives.

• Responds to facility service requests in a timely and professional manner.

• Collaborates with Facilities staff, contractors, and county departments to address building comfort and operational issues.

• Ensures compliance with OSHA, EPA, and county safety policies, including proper handling of refrigerants and use of PPE.

• Participates in on-call rotations, emergency response, and after-hours maintenance as required.

• Supervises the Facilities Technicians in the absence of the Assistant Director.

• Performs other duties as assigned.

• Knowledge of building maintenance systems including but not limited to HVAC, security, electrical and plumbing.

• Skill in effective communication, both verbally and in writing.

• Skill in the use of computers and software applications related to the essential functions of the job.

• Skill in the use of hand tools and equipment used in the performance of essential job functions.

• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other personnel and the public.

• Ability to use or learn how to use a variety of equipment and tools needed to make repairs and maintain equipment.

• Ability to operate building maintenance equipment and tools.

• Ability to utilize asset management software and Microsoft Office applications.

• Ability to perform physical labor in extreme temperatures and conditions for extended periods of time.

• Ability to work extended or broken shifts in emergency situations.

• High school diploma or GED.

• Technical or vocational training in HVAC systems preferred.

• HVAC certification (e.g., EPA Section 608 Technician Certification) preferred.

• Four (4) plus years of experience in commercial HVAC installation and repair preferred.

• Prior working experience involving the use of common hand tools and small equipment or equivalent training, education, and/or experience.

• Valid State of Virginia Driver's License with a driving record that meets HR Policy requirements.

• Criminal Background check and drug screen are required.
