Job summary

Micron Solutions is seeking a hands-on Tooling Engineering Manager to lead our Tool Room and Mold Making operations in Fitchburg, MA. This is not a desk-only role; you’ll work side-by-side with mold makers to solve complex tooling challenges and support new mold builds.

The ideal candidate has deep expertise in injection mold construction, repair, troubleshooting, and maintenance, plus strong leadership to build a high‑performing team.

Responsibilities

What You’ll Do
Lead by Example
  • Work alongside Mold Makers and Tool Room personnel on mold construction, repair, modification, maintenance, and troubleshooting activities.
  • Mentor, coach, and train mold makers, apprentices, and technical personnel.
  • Develop technical talent and help build the next generation of skilled mold makers.
  • Foster a culture of craftsmanship, accountability, safety, and continuous improvement.
  • Lead recruiting, onboarding, training, and development initiatives within the Tool Room.
Manage Tool Room Operations
  • Direct daily tool room operations supporting production and new product development.
  • Establish priorities and schedules to support production demands and customer requirements.
  • Oversee mold construction, assembly, fitting, testing, qualification, repair, and maintenance activities.
  • Ensure tooling documentation, maintenance records, and work orders are maintained accurately.
  • Support hands‑on troubleshooting of critical production and tooling issues as needed.
Drive Tooling Excellence
  • Own the lifecycle management of all tooling assets.
  • Develop and improve preventive maintenance and tooling reliability programs.
  • Monitor tooling performance and drive improvements in uptime, mold life, productivity, and quality.
  • Lead root cause investigations related to tooling and manufacturing issues.
  • Identify and implement tooling improvements that reduce costs and improve performance.
Support New Tool Development
  • Participate in mold design reviews and Design for Manufacturability (DFM) discussions.
  • Support tooling activities associated with new product introductions and product launches.
  • Evaluate and qualify mold suppliers and tooling vendors.
  • Manage external tooling projects, timelines, costs, and supplier performance.
  • Ensure successful mold validation, qualification, and production release activities.
Drive Continuous Improvement
  • Support injection molding operations through technical expertise and troubleshooting.
  • Partner closely with Operations, Engineering, Quality, Maintenance, and Manufacturing teams.
  • Lead initiatives focused on scrap reduction, downtime reduction, OEE improvement, and tooling reliability.
  • Standardize best practices for mold maintenance and tool room operations.
  • Promote Lean Manufacturing principles throughout the department.
What We’re Looking For
Required Qualifications
  • 10+ years of hands‑on mold making, tool and die, or injection molding tooling experience.
  • Extensive experience building, repairing, troubleshooting, and maintaining injection molds.
  • Prior leadership, supervisory, or mentoring experience within a tool room or manufacturing environment.
  • Strong knowledge of mold construction, mold maintenance, and tooling systems.
  • Advanced blueprint reading and GD&T knowledge.
  • Experience with CNC machining, EDM, milling, grinding, turning, and precision machining processes.
  • Ability and willingness to remain hands‑on and actively involved in daily tool room operations.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Tool & Die, Mold Making, Journeyman, or Apprenticeship certification.
  • Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Manufacturing, Plastics, or a related field.
  • Experience in medical device, life sciences, or other regulated manufacturing environments.
  • Familiarity with SolidWorks or similar CAD software.
  • Experience with ERP, MRP, or CMMS systems.
